anyone ever heard that you need to replace the rubber bits round the windows to make them work properly

Nope, pull your doorcard off and splodge some soft grease (ive used Pace RC30 suspension fork grease with good results) all in the metal runner under the glass where the white plastic bit slides as the window goes up and down, the spray some WD40 or GT85 in your window rubbers and your glass will fly up and down like a guillotine lol

use silicone spray in the side runners, better than WD40

my alarm man gave me some, cant remeber the brand but it is readily available i think

yeah silitect works well but do NOT get it on the windscreen. Silicon and silicates can be bad news from a smeary point of view.
