Im aware with a lot of you guys, your rents have or were into there motors in the days of black & white an stuff...

BUT does any one else have the same toss @rse family i have? Where absoloutly no one in your direct family is "into" cars in any shape or form?

Where you come home from work & your promoted to "family fleet mechanic"??

Or your dad is that uneducated in the world of automobiles he even asks if he can get alloys for his car? And how much horsepower his car has got? Or what happens if you stick Diesel in a petrol?

I mean, i wouldnt mind all that much, but my dad spent years in the army working on some of the most expensive machinery of the black & white years of his life, yet a simple oil change is waaaaaaaay outta his league :tard:

Anyone else get this? Or am i really adopted?

Im in EXACTLY the same boat.

The only person in my "recent" family that was interested in cars/engines was my granddad. My dad says thats where i got it from, it just skipped a generation lol lol

Dude. That's my family down to a T. None of them even wash their cars/perform the most basic maintenance.

Have no idea which marques/models are decent, don't test drive when buying etc.

I'm a right black sheep. lol

My family are not into cars in any way shape or form, the rents share an 04 plate honda spazz, and my dad bought a rotting 2cv from down the street about five years ago thats never run and he hasnt a clue how to make it run, they complain like feck that ive got a set of coilovers in the dining room yet he leaves his french houses magazines everywhere lol

My Mum doesn't really mind cars but she doesn't know too much about them - I think I got it from my Dad/Papa

My Dad had 3 Nova's before I got mine, Mk2 Astra's etc - He always went looking at an original Sport back in the day and never bought it hence me always wanting one and wanting to know more about them

I suppose that's how I got into it all lol

No its not that i dont know my stuff, far from it in fact.

Its the fact that im the only mother****er in the house that does so i get stuck with all the sh1tty jobs on cars that dont even belong to me!!

My family wouldn't trust me to touch their cars they all go to garages haha

Swap you dude. Only difference would be you get to look after a 2005 Terrano II, 2007 Corsa C and a 2001 Micra instead of your current fleetlol.

Every last 'car thing' is given to me. Sometimes I say take it to a garage, I can't/won't do that.

I used to regret my dad not being into cars. i always thought it would have been cool to have that in common. He always planned to get a rag top Beetle and 'do it up' for my mam. He could do the fabrication/repair work and no doubt the mechanical stuff, but just doesn't have the interest :(

It's even hard to get his help when I'm on with his own car. lol

^Limp, my dad ask's me to show him how to do things LOL!

When he had his first Meriva, popped the bonnet to look at the puny 1600 EcoTeker.

He points a plastic thing to which i look at..."whats this bit here Mike" points at a sticker saying "Caution - Engine Fan can operate at anytime"

So theres me staring at him with a reply of "....It must be a clue!"

An all i get is a complete blank stare back.

Thats what im up against lol

My grandad owned his own garage/recovery service, so spent most of his life with cars. Its the ONLY place i could of been passed on any car interest tbh! lol

My Dad's into cars and has told me 200 times about the Cortina which had an engine from a Corsair put in and was sprayed black.

Maybe more than 200 times.

Later on he had a Lotus Elan etc. etc. Over the last couple of decades the interest has remained but morphed as he now boats it in an automatic Merc these days. Spends time checking tyre pressures, levels etc. and keeping it looking good.

My dad has owned his own garage for the past 25 years, been a mechanic all his life and he's now 50 odd. He used to rally a mk2 escort rs2000 on twin 45's blah blah blah. Had about a million mini's. He's been there and done it all.

My cousin is a Qualified Mechanic, worked at the same garage as me, also has done an xe conversion in a corsa.

Not alot more I could ask for really when doing engine conversions in rusty nova's

I'm sure a few people have heard the story on my dad looking down on his C25XE in the omega with the bonnet propped up, just staring at it... I went over and asked what was up and he just stated to me "...Sort of thing they put in race cars that is isn't it" I looked down at the "ECOTEC" written on top and had to jog away before I creased up laughing.

So in answer to the first post, same boat lol Uncles a mechanic so he generally gets all the crap jobs etc though luckily lol

my cousins are 'into' cars but one is an utter max power F&F spastic thinking that power and rock hard suspension are key to a good car. The other is a bit less of a dimwit but is influenced a little by his brother lol

the rest dont care :)

All my family have sensible jobs really lol nurses, solicitors, uncle is very high up in Goodyear tyres, my other uncle (Bill Bentley) is a distant relative of the creators of Bentley cars but even he has no interest. An my cousins that do live local (as in, not living in London still) are just ****wits with private school education as there dad (my uncle who works for Goodyears) earns to much to let them try anything involving dirt or grime!

Theyre all to "above" getting down & dirty with a hefty tool kit TBH.

Dad's car History : Austin 8 - scrapped it to buy a 1959 mini 850 in 1959. He says the mini is the worst car EVER designed and Issigonis was a maverik and a bodger.
Then he had Ford Cortina Mk1, mk2, mk3, mk4, series 80 twice, avenger (which he says was erm ****), sierra estate, saphire, estate, and estate, and 4 mondeos and now a 2.0 Focus Estate Ghia in white.

All Except the Austin 8 was new and all were serviced by a Main Dealer.

My mother : Capri (wait for it)..............Scooter 150 cc, followed by a 1.5 Datsun Sunny, and then a Nissan Sunny.

FIL - Lots of New Vauxhalls but a mk1 cav, 2 mk2 cavs (one of which he sold me and I wish I'd kept), a mk3 cav (which my wife owns now) and a mk4 astra with 13K on the clock.

Sister. Five fiesta's all serviced by the main dealer.

Wife's Brother - Various French Cars Xantia, xsara, and C5.
Wife's sister has had 3 cars in 22 years - a suzuki flying zit, a mk1 fiesta 998 and a mk3 escort 1.3 OHV. Her husband has had a Volvo Estate (the same one) for 15 years. It's almost perfect despite having travelled 300K.

Basically, Nobody is interested in Driving, or cars. They treat them well, but find them exciting as a loaf of bread.

My wife and I however, are more interested in having fun. She's got an MX5 for dry days and a Cavalier for family holidays and shopping. I've got a ****ty astra which was supposed to have been an infill whilst i looked for another mk2 cav.

But a nova is now planned.

My whole family are intersted in cars, my dad started his own auto electrical company, mum has owned a few modded cars and dont mind getting her hands dirty, like changing the head gasket on her old clio.

My grandad worked for the RAF as a mechanic before retiring.
Even when i was little i would go outside and stand and watch my dad/bros work on their cars.

My bro had a 2.0 16v nova when i was in my teens, broke and scrapped it after it was rear ended. Other brother had countless novas and corsas before buying a M3. My first car was a nova too.

And yet i still get left on my own to do my cars.

My dad is the only one in my family........so just me and him.....not sure if its a good thing though.....we tend to argue on how things "should" be done!!!

When I was a kid my dad was either in the garage or at work, if you wanted to see or speak to my dad you had to go into the garage and ask questions about what he was doing until he got annoyed with you and kicked you out, got my Nova and its now my obsession too.

However my brothers have nice cars Corsa C and a Lupo Gti but they wouldn't know how to do anything on them.

My dad has had the same Morris Minor for about 25 years and its had about 6 engines (A-Series, Fiat engines e.c.t),we are thinking of trying something completely different Zetec Turbo or a Fiat Coupe Turbo engine, and he has always had something decent for a daily (Porsche, TVR, Triumph Stag), one day the Moggy will be mine.

He is kinda my hero

But my love of cars comes from my dad, as I dunno, I just dolol

great thread,.. even if it has got a lil agony aunt-ish.
I think im the first ever petrol head in our family. Thats obviously a bad thing, for me.
I could go on about it for pages and pages, but going on about what trouble i have with the family on here aint gonna fix anything.
But in a nut-shell yes no one in family understands at all and for years theyve been trying to make me feel bad about this car 'obsession'.. not nice of them really, is it.. Ive not done anything to bother them particularly with my car habits, other than i guess i look like im not growing out of it..?
I guess i shouldnt really be where i am with cars - been an uphill struggle.. but ive stood up to them (and girlfriends ive had tbh) and kept my hobby alive lol

Stuart

does being a mechanic make you a petrol head?

I know when I was an ECU design monkey I actually went off playing with cars in my spare time (ie petrol headness died off) as I was working with cars day in day out.

My dad is an ex-mechanic, so where I learned my (basic) knowledge of mechanics from. He used to work on old triumphs mostly, which is again where the desire for old BL stuff came from in me. However him and my mum just bang on about how I should sell both the Nova and the Celica (because they're old) and get a newer car, like an Astra diesel. Nice.

My mum doesn't drive, my sister is the sort who would like a new Impreza etc. She also drives like a lunatic.

Funny thing is, my dad moans at me for poking around with cars and modifications etc, yet when I was talking to my mates dad who spent time with him in garage trade, he filled me in on how my dad would spend his days putting Spitfire carbs on Heralds and stuff of that ilk lol

My mum has no interest whatsoever. When I was in primary school we had a Talbot Sunbeam that dad ended up working on for most weekends to keep it running. Since then he has had no interest whatsoever. If something goes wrong with mums corsa he just puts it off. Last summer I had to borrow the corsa for a day & found out that the front pads were down to bare metal - mum had been complaining about the noise for weeks but he just put it off. Cue a massive bollocking from me and mum lol.

Both parents always moaned at me for having a stash of spares&tools when I had the nova, but when I managed to fix whatever problems they had with bits I had laying around they didn't moan!
