Hi-I was removing my cylinder head today and one of the bolts snapped as I was loosening it.Theres about 15-20mm of the bolt sticking out of the block.Any suggestions as to how to remove it?? I was thinking of dousing it in penetrating fluid, leave overnight and them weld a nut to the stub that's left. Thanks

just get a pair of moul grips on it, it wil come out easy enough as it not under any tention !

if it not to tight just get some mole grips on it. if not try drilling it and then a stud extractor, welding it might set it in there even tighter as the heat will travel down the stud, expanding it in the block....

2 nuts locked together = something to fix a socket to. Remember to clean the holes before fitting new bolts.

This happened when we did my head gasket, My bf used a small grindin/cutting disk (dremel i think) to cut a slot in the stud then used a large flat blade screwdriver to undo it.

Hopefully it will come out with mole grips.:)

If it is siezed in the block, (take your time is the best suggestion) soak with penentrating oil, and leave as you said.

I always find a shock with a blunt instrument i.e. hammer is always useful in shifting stuborn studs, as the head stud will have been in tension when installed, a few good blows directly on the stud end vertically will help shift it.

A good set of mole grips should get hold OK, not 99p ones from pound stretcherlol

If there is some movement back and forth just work it and it will ease off(as long as the thread/bolt wasn't damaged when assembled, unfortunately seen that before:mad: ) i.e. don't just try and wind it out, if it doesn't want to

Use plenty of oil when working the threads.

Hope it helps;)

Cut two flats into it with a grinder and undo it with a open end spanner

whereabouts are you located????

i have stud extractors that simply pinch onto the shaft to grip it. if local, i'd lend

Hi-Just to update-bolts out, combination of soaking in diesel, shocking with hammer, vice grips and then welding a nut on made it slowly come out.Bolt was rusted it it seems as there was water in the hole-probably from the last time it was done. Thanks again

try and drill into the center of the snapped bolt so you can fit a alankey socket in and ratched it out it works all the time on exhaust bolts on trucks
