Hi guys,

sprayed my door today,

Prep 800 grit wet&dry
3 coats of primer
rubbed it down again
then gave it 3 coats of colour (Burgundy red)

I used hycote acrylic paint (rattle can) which was cheap, The colour match is great.
Ive just used 1200 grit & then 1500 grit to remove some over spray & afew marks. My question is do I need to apply a clear coat or can i just use a cutting compound & buff it up? Thanks :)

I think that your colour is a solid colour IIRC and shouldn't need any laquer

The same as Flame Red doesn't need any :)

You don't sand before lacquering!

Leave it a week or so & cut it with a polish, then buff it & wax it for protection.

I got told to sand it down with 1200 grit to remove overspray then finish off with 1500 when spraying a solid colour.

ive read thou that you shouldnt sand when lacquering but if you have to sand with 1200 grit then add another colour coat before adding clear coat.

Lacquer doesn't fill sanding marks. And you'll dull the surface of the paint by sanding the metallic base (colour) you'll remove the flake from the base causing it to lose the flake look that makes it metallic.

Why would there be over spray? The paint will still be wet when you spray the next coat on, the finely coat being left to dry.

Flatting and polishing is normal. On a direct gloss (solid colour) you do it after the last coat of paint.

On a base and clear you don't touch the base (colour) anless there's a prob which you flat off with 800/1000 then re base up. Then lacquer it, then flat and polish the lacquer.

Be very careful when flatting off with 1200, as its very easy to burn thru the paint or lacquer. I wouldn't tell any one doing a diy job to use 1200 anless they knew hat they where doing.

That's cause they are both 1k, you can just put on the colour and not really have to lacquer it after if you want. as it self drys hence the sanding.

But you'll get a much better finish if you let the colour dry a little then lacquer over the top. With no sanding!
