hello folks, ive just stumbled upon something which is going to make me want to die. ive just got my 1400 engine in and bolted to my F10 box, and started to rebuild, first things first, starter motor, couldnt just go right. tried to fit the original starter motor and then realised that it wont fit because the gearbox bell housing is a different shape to the crankcase, AND, im not sure even if it did fit in, i dont think the starter gear is going to engage the flywheel. i am so not happy. Can anyone help? please tell me i dont need to change the gearbox now...

You seen my reply then yeah? Wait til someone else gives a 2nd opinion maybe you can use a different starter like off 1.2 if flywheels are the same? i'm not entirely sure

Ay? Youve kind of lost me matey? the f10 is a 4 speed right?? and is used on all small block novas? Unless you have swapped some bits over from a big block which im still unsure if thats possible i cant see whay it wont fit?? IS it the same starter you used before have you changed the gearbox??

yeah, but its an F10 5 speed, cam off my 13N/S and going onto a C14SE, was told by numerous people that it'd work, it probably would with the F13 bell housing, but then theres still the issue of the flywheel... will my 1300 flywheel work or would i have to get the 1400 flywheel?

Why are you using the F10? SRi's came with an F13. I would assume the F10 bell housing is too small for the SRi flywheel much as it would be with a 1600 GSi engine. In which case you would probably need to use a 1300 flywheel, but that may not share the same bolt pattern as the end of the crank on your 1400.
Fit an F13 & use the slightly larger clutch plate the SRi & GSi had.

i wasnt told that the F10 wouldnt work, the 1300 flywheel does fit, its on atm, it was only once id got the engine in and it all bolted up that i realised the starter wouldnt fit, absolutely gutted, but, on the up-side, the bloke i bought the engine off still has the F13 that came off it originally, and a fooking steal at 30 quid for the F13, 1400 flywheel and clutch... result! ive got the anti roll bar off atm so the bottom joints are all split and ready to come off, im going to carry on building it up, just leave the started motor and manifold off until ive changed the box, does anyone know if the linkage off my F10 will work on the F13?

the last time i reckoned that the 1400 needed the f13 box, everybody told me i was wrong, and as i've never owned a factory 1400, i stopped saying it.

i was always led to believe that the 1400 needed the f13 box.

everyone on this site kept telling me i was wrong. it appears that i wasn't wrong. incorrect knowledge is a right pain. people end up in your position, with the wrong box in their.

at least the gearbox swap is a doddle. if your old box is an sr one, then it will have a 4.18 diff. with a little help from haynes & a puller set, you could stick the diff into the f13 box to make a really low ratio box for better acceleration. top end suffers a bit though.

i want to keep it as top-endy as poss, it'll be quick enough of the mark with the 40s etc anyway, and my mate (f***ing stupidly) thinks my SR will give his 07 plate (rotary) RX8 Kuro a run for its money... i think not, dumbass ****el...! ill keep the F10 box and trans though, for possible later mods, i need to swot up on gearboxes, final drives etc i think... got both the nova haynes's and quite a bit of savvy so ill be alright!!

this is true, i thought it'd have to be alot more obvious to be picked out, and its not like its not the proper name for the engine...

? im not exactly sure what they're called, or how to spell it so i wont try, save myself an ear bashing off a moderator! and with regard to the F13 on 1400s issue, the old skool 1400 8v they put in late SRs might have had a F10 box, but might have upgraded it for the engine when the multec system went on it... F13 it is then... and bump starting for a muck about down my road... my neighbours must have missed the noise..!
