FINALLY i turn 17 in just over 5 months lol

Now, i need to start looking round for insurance qotes for both my cars, so here goes.

My dad has said he'll insure the Nova for me, fully comp, with everything declared, alloys, lowering kit, stereo etc etc on my 17th birthday for me, on my own policy, no named driver or "fronting" as its called.

So, ill be 17, with a modified Nova 1000cc Fully comp, on a 1991 plate, wheres the best place to look? been told Footman James or place slike that? and also not to go to the lieks of confused.com as they are usually cheaper when you go direct.

Secondly, i have my 1.4l 5dr Corsa, its a 1997 plate and the only modifications it has done are alloy wheels, a dvd player :( and leather calibra seats.

Now say for instance i replace my stereo with a standard unit, would the alloys and leather trim need telling to the insurance company? as from the factory the car came with alloys as standard, and leatehr seats were actually available in 5dr corsas, but not calibra ones.

So where would be the best kinda' places to look for this? im only thinking of going TPF&T and possibley removing the modifications, but tis still a big-ish engine :(

Also, ill of been riding my moped for 1 year with no claims (hopefully) so could this be counted as a 1 years NCB?

Any help appreciated :thumb:

EDT:- The nova had an alarm and imobilisher, both insurance approved AFAIK, and the corsa also had an approved alarm, and works on a chipped key :thumb:

For decent insurance discount, you need a thatcham approved alarm, installed by a pro.

As for the corsa, anything it didn't roll out the factory with is a mod. So yes, declare the odds and sods. Don't be surprised if its not that much more expensive than the Nova, in fact I'd actually wager it to be cheaper.

The Nova... good luck. Why fully comp? To be honest, the base value will probably only be £250 tops, which your excess will probably exceed anyway, so there's no real point. Modifed specialists tend to only deal with 19+ so your age will restrict you more. FJ tend to be a tad snooty I've found, they prefer "classic" and specialist cars, didn't seem interested in my Nova whenever I've contacted them in the past but may be worth a look either way.

Also ring admiral and elephant (so you can list the mods, their websites only allow <5 iirc), adding your dad as a second driver with them will bring the price down. They also give a small discount for experience, so your bike NCB may come in handy.

I think you might be changing some of those mods to standard dude, i just declared my wheels, i go from £804 to just over £1000, bad times

Mopeds do not count! (I tried that one)

Also, to most insurers, a standard nova is valued at £75gbp, minus a £250 excess because your 17, plus your normal excess, you loosing £350!

Direct line was the cheapest for me, but they only do standard cars!

Seats you will be fine with, alloys, you can dream on!

Cheapest quote I got for a nova, 1000cc, with alloys, gsi kit, and lowered, was £4600!

Not always the case, as said some insurers do give a small discount for moped experience even though it won't be a full no claims.

Have you ever been on the car with a provisional? My ex got discount when she passed as she had a years experience as a named driver with a provisional.

I tried to say about the moped etc as my mate got about £100 off because of his years NCB on the ped.

You will end up paying loads on the nova for sure.

Probably pay less to go get a mk2 sr and leave it standard

TBH you will struggle to find companies to cover modded cars when you are under 19.

And fully comp can be a waste of money on a old car, unless you have agree value you will stay only get about a 400quid payout should the worst happen.

I would bang a quote in confused.com, see who will cover you when you are 17, and then ring the actual company up to see if they cover mods...

If it's only a bit more my recommendation would be to get fully comp; if :thumb: your car ends up in a difficult position to recover it's easier if someone else pays.

Totally agree, car insurance changes month by month so they will only be able to give you a guesstimate and not an accurate quote.

Drive the Corsa to get use to driving properly on your own, then if you bump it, it isn't as bad as bumping your sweetheart. :thumb:

Best off ringing insurance companys as they all differ.

When I was 17 my first car was a corsa sport, 1.4 16v, to insure that standard with no modifications would have been 1900 quid.

I am now 19, had a quote for an xe nova, through adrain flux (highways) or something like that, only place that will insure someone with an engine conversion with less than 2 years driving experience. 1300 quid with 1 years no claims and 3 points, been driving 18 months, thats with alloys, bigger brakes, roll cage, gsi kit, exhaust, suspension etc.

Ive heard of people that have payed more than that and they're over 20 with no points.

Its as if they make it up on the spot whatever number comes into their head first lol

some mgs are 5years, minis are 15 years. for a general car it has to be 20years old but obviously there is some exclusions.
