What oil cooler do people use on xe's in novas, is it worth getting a cav/astra one or going for an aftermarket one such as mocal. if so, what size?

edit - can it be bypassed?

thanks

A std cav/astra one will do it fine. Only bigger ones are needed if its gonna spend all day on track.

I think most people use what comes standard with the engine. As Benn said, only really need to upgrade if tracking it hard. Even then, IMO, might be abit of overkill.

Thanks for the replies.

Can the oil cooler be bypassed? I seem to recall something about removing the sandwich plate at the oil filter and by-passing it using something from a c20ne?

I know people might say "if the original cav/astra had it, then it must be needed". But its extra work to source the oil cooler/pipes.

IIRC you can remove the sandwich plate part. Have a search, may have been covered before.

BUT, not all that hard to get hold of the pipes second hand.

Doh, search is my friend and all that.

Turns out the sandwich plate can be removed and bypassed by using a fitting from any smallblock:

I thought the c20ne fitting was needed but evidently not, happy days.

It seems this has been done plenty before.... so it shouldn't cause any problems running without a cooler?

Yeah its easy to remove it, i never use them. You need a thread bit that screws in to the filter and up in to the pump. Sure its found on 2lt 8v engines.

I use a Cav Sri one on my hatch, it fitted behind the grill, and was a good fit, on my previous saloon, I removed the cooler, never notice a temperature difference

Yeah I thought you had to get the fitting off 2l 8v, but that thread says you can get it off any smallblock? Only one way to find out I suppose.

Graeme - yeah done some searching there and it seems oil cooler is really only necessary for track use.
