Ok, so i got a letter from the DVLA the other day. The picture on my DL is due to expire in January next year (yes people they expire and you can be fined up to £1000!!). No biggie, get a new pic, send forms along with £20 (robbing twunts!) and new DL will be issued.

BUT...my counterpart still shows my SP30 and SP50. These are 5 years old next month, 29th IIRC, so if i send after the 30th will my new counterpart be clear?? Not a massive problem as they are or will be five years old. Just be nice to have a properly clean licence lol

I know you normally have to pay to have them removed but seeing as i am getting a new pic done, will it not get done at the same time?

im 90% sure if you are having something like a new one sent out or a renewal then any updates that are due will happen automaticly. having said that, it is the dvla!!

lol thats what i was thinking. Always wrong to "assume" with people like the DVLA. Wouldnt surprise me if it doesnt get done and they think i will pay to have them taken off. They would be thinking wrong!!

Going by all of the horror stories regarding the massive funk ups with licences recently make a photocopy of your licence before you send it off as there have been people sending off to renew like you and having provisionals sent back apparently!

And i wouldve thought that you would have to pay seperately to have them removed tbh, they will simply reissue the licence as it is, as youve not paid to remove them!

Cheers for that Spud. Good idea. And yeah, i did think thats what they would do. Re-issue mine still with points. Knobheads lol

the reason you have to pay to have them removed tho is because they have to print/make a new licence, however they are doing that anyway so makes no difference if they remove it

if the points have expired - i.e. Over 4 years old - they will be removed automatically. Mine were when i renewed my license last month.

lol

Picture lasts 10 years from date of license. So, for example, I passed my test on the 11th October 1999, but my full license was dated 26/10/99 - so my photocard expired on the 26/10/09.

The DVLA will send you a reminder approximately a month prior to expiry, but keep an eye on it - if you get to two weeks prior to expiry then I would contact them.

The counterpart doesn't get changed unless you're changing your address so points wont come off. Fortunately I got them to change my address at the same time as my pic so points went bye bye for free lol

Wrong, mine was changed.

[edit] i'm wondering, perhaps those who have expired points get a "clean" license back, but if your license has points on that haven't expired, or nothing else on there needs changing you get the old license back.

hmmm, mate of mine got his old one back, maybe because some of his points had expired but others hadn't. I'll pass then lol
