early ones (1993)have problems with the DIS unit iirc.

and just like every mk3 golf.. the rust.

sound is great on them, but most guys think the got a race car, but its build as an autobahn cruizer, so very long gearratio's. (you'll eat them alive with a stock c20xe nova)

**EDIT**

here in the netherlands it's a boyracer car, and the dont take abuse very well (using a lot of oil)
so there are many sh!t ones around.

My bro owns a auto one, ok but the gearbox is dead.

They do sound very good, his with a cone filter is perfect.
Rust is a issue for sure.

Just thought of somthing else to look for, the oil cooler, as there water cooled, if it breaks down you might think its head gasket.

the bores go oval too, think my mate told me you can get a fully rebuilt engine,supercharger/turbo(cant remember which) setup which was around 400bhp or so for 4k....cost of an LET with that power would be alot more.

good engine, but massively let down by the poor chassis/wooly steering imo.

I did as well. A mate of mine had one in for an mot so I took it to the test station and was expecting to be pulled back in my seat a little, nope didn't happen.
Sound great though so I might get an mp3 of the noise and play in through the stereo lol

12v quite a strong unit, 24v suffer with rocker failure, both slow as funk, such a narrow 'V', virtually in-line set up. Clever design tho, thats a positive.

I had one for a while and rather liked it. Rock stock with the VR6 badge removed :)

I didn't find it particularly bad for fuel. As someone else has pointed out they're not really a 'V', more of a squashed up I-6 but definitely interesting. Also worth remembering the old ones are 16 odd years old so are nearly two decades behind the current hot snot and dynamically nowhere near. Snivelling punks still view them as up on a perch needing to be knocked off which is missing the point somewhat. The gearbox always felt fragile and mine was threatening to oxidize but didn't... I sold mine for an Impreza (which I then crashed :tard: ) but felt I'd had my time with it and didn't want to get involved with the gearbox, timing chains or clutch and sold it running perfectly albeit with a short MOT.

Anything you buy will need the rear beam bushes doing immediately if they havn't been done. Servicing costs are a few % higher due to 50% more plugs and a decent sized sump. If you get round to test driving it may sound like the clutch is slipping but that's just the buzziness of the '6'. Or the clutch may be slipping

Always use to like them, at one point wanted one, but a mate had one, i drove it and was very very disappointed, sounds nice (more bark then it's bite) but was very slow, lack of responsive kick back, at the time me and this mate did quick try each others car etc, i had my old GSi with standard XE on crap Koni shocks etc, he got out smiling telling me my car was a go kart and was wicked, i then lied! lol

Would rather have a Calibra, or MK3 Astra GSi over one.

AAA engine sucks. ABV is more power but from what I gather they're rare in Golfs and Corrados.

dad has one, pretty descent goes well to. make sure you get a later one with the obd2? engine as the obd1 is only a 174bhp, but the later ones have abit more, or go for highline spec for better interior and other bits (like my old mans) solid cars though cant break them lol. hes only got a cat back, piper cross cone filter and a stage 2 remapp which see's him at 210bhp. also a good thing i watched was on fifth gear about the petrol you use on higher performance engines, the scooby the used with normal petrol was at 235 and with the best stuff either bp ultimate or shell opitmax it was around 24 somthing, it does use alot of petrol esspecially when hes always running it on super unleaded

Yeas, but thats on a blown engine which can take advantage of higher RON fuel.

they have timing chain issues aswell, and as the chain is at the flywheel end of the engine, its a gearbox out job

i always wanted to stick one of these engines in a mk2 golf...witht he leather interior aswell. beautiful engine for cruising just thirsty

tbh its an old engine, even the dub guys dont do it as much now, the in thing is the 20valve turbo, as its easier to mount (g60 mounts) and faster.:thumb:

they did it on somthing else that werent turbo'd aswell which had some power difference the main thing was the torque.

My advice is to avoid mk3 Golfs in general. Funkin crap.
Being a V6, the VR will be a disappointment anyway. No V6 is going to give you a shove in the back, they are smooth power output engines with a flat torque curve, sit back & cruise indeed. OH & since owning my mk3, it seems anything that goes wrong is a 'common fault'. Quite where the VW/reliabilty reputation comes from I can't imagine.

True, but it is rather fun to go from 20mph all the way to ~140 without having to change gear lol

Agree. But most people rate an engine by feeling it's peakyness. V6's typically dont have this like a 4pot or better still, a 4 pot turbo. So most boy racers would prefer an 80bhp turbo'd 1.0L over a 220bhp n/a, smooth as silk V6 power delivery.
