Did anyone watch this? Was a complete joke!
do tell I cba to watch it on i player

i watched it and thought it was a load of rubbish the stuff they got them to do i was doing when i was 15
im 3RD year apprentice mechanic at the moment and could of solved those problems in half the time
Was out. Might iplayer this. Looks like a laugh.
"Tsssssssk that's not gonna be cheap love...." lol
the fact that they struggled to fit a kill switch in 30 minutes!
And not checking the gap on a spark plug before fitting WTF!

took about 10/20 minutes to notice that the coil wasnt connected? LOL a good mechanic could tell that the engine isnt getting spark just by listening to it, tbh coil etc.. would be the first thing id check straight away, if you could hear its getting no spark.
it was quite shocking that not all of them could fix the horn/indicator/light problem lol

They aint mechanics... they are fitters at dealerships... and most are apprentices...
Some stuff made me laugh though, like how the judges over reacted to the live wire on the seat. Yes it was dangerous, but not for the fuel tank reason... there is a live feed straight into the tank... how do you think the level works... lol
Just going by the radio advert for it, it was going to be a farse/giggle.
Not seen it, will i-Player later.
The biggest problem of a live wire on the seat is beign stabbed in the ass with it... 12v will do nothing really.

Yeah that was stupid.
also when they fitted the immobilisers, didnt have a clue did they.
Watching now. Bernie Fineman, are you fcuking kidding me?! lol
"Cat the fackin springzzz!"
watched it last night, what a fail.
Immob time now...don't all of the Fords they're destroying have PATS anyway? lol
My switch would be under the gear gaiter surround if I was on with the Escrotes. lol

going on the radio advert, could some one explain to me how you maintan a ecu,
sorry i thought the phase "sealed unit" gave it away.
but on that thought im off to put some de-ironised water into my sealed for life battery
lol. If it was a French POS I'd maintain the 'brain' by deflecting water away from it. Proper cars have them installed in the interior.
I never heard the radio ad. LMAO @ what you describe though!
cant doubt willl one bit, he did realy well, apart from some stupid things about stripping weight, but atleast he noticed eventually.

Love the bits they got given on the performance task....air filter and back box....cant belive (cant remember his name) did not check the plugs before he put them in.....was just another crappy tv program...
I used to 'maintain' ECU's but that was via software and doing it properly lol
Not everyone mounts their ECU's inside ;) it just takes a little understanding of howto seal it :)

Yeah he was far and away the best one on there and he is an RAC man, what does that say about the proper mechanics that dont just tow you home!

That was rather amusing. For the speed test I'm amazed that they didn't both ditch the exhaust, tailgate and doors aswell. Will seemed pretty clued up and sensible. The others were just chancers.
it just takes a little understanding of howto seal it :)
Duct tape and an old tesco carrier bag?

Duct tape and an old tesco carrier bag?
and some hoes to protect the wiring
Bathroom sealent and a cardboard box top. lol
The whole program was rubbish/funny. I hate the overly dramatic voiceovers/music on all reality TV crap/gameshows these days.
*EDIT. Boat's and hoe's?
and some hoes to protect the wiring
Why would I have garden tools in my engine bay? :wtf:
I thought he meant several of these.

My switch would be under the gear gaiter surround if I was on with the Escrotes. lol
Good idea..
How would you fit it though ?
I was thinking of just cuting th big red wire and wiring a switch inbetween it, but if your stealing the car you could just pull the wire off and use it to make a connection between the black and red and start teh car lol
Run extra wire from the ign live down to the switch. TBH it didn't have to be fantastic as it only had to withstand 30 seconds or something lol.
The theif should have 'black boxed' the cars. lol I'd also remove the king lead and tell Bernie to GTF. lol

You know whats an easier way ? just take the fookin lead off the coil lol
it was alrite as somethng different to watch, couldnt belive they all struggled with the immobiliser thing tho, i personally would of killed the fuel pump relay. i also thought they wouldnt like the fact that he just left the airfilter off in the speed task,i agree that its ok for a short sprint but not exactly the proper way of doing things

im not even a mechanic, im an office boy. Only been working on cars about 6 months and i could of done it!
I'd have simply cut the pedals off... cant drive it too well then lol
i didnt see this but one of the office girls i work with did, her words were, " did they get the "mechanics" from halfords?" i rofl'd my waffles....
looks like im goin to have to on demand this tonight for a good laugh

Yeah I heard that, thought it was a bit of a farce, i replied to it yep, yep, yep, yep... what? lol
I missed this but yes, as said the Radio advert LOL lol lol WTF LOL
iPlayer this i thinks :)

I never watched it!
but i never gap my plugs, just dump then in, as they're pregapped anyway
struggle with immobiliser? would have loved to see them fit the alarm/immobiliser and central locking system i put in the nova the other week lol
tbh i don't know how that guy missed that spark plug even i would of caught that on.
i bought some NGK spark plugs a few days ago that got delivered today, first thing i did was get a feeler gage and measure the gap, just to make sure they were all precise. its the most obvious thing to check.

are the mechanics in these competitons quaified or still in training
This is on again tonight on BBC3 at 11.45pm for anyone who aint seen it yet and has interwebs too slow to watch iplayer:thumb:

Lucky you, apparently our setup wont record from freeview so i have to stay up and watch it lol
Lots of plugs come pregapped, partly as they are multi electrode and partly as you cant trust spastic fitters.
Its fairly easy for the yoof of today to miss something like that as they wont know any different

 Thats very stereotypical imo. like i said in my previous post, im only 17 and i check all spark plugs with a feeler guage before i fit them into any car. Not meaning to sound rude, but its not all "yoof's"
And not checking the gap on a spark plug before fitting WTF!
but i never gap my plugs, just dump then in, as they're pregapped anyway
I was about to say then same, i have never ever check gaps on plugs, it was years and years ago that plugs wernt pregapped, so theres no real need to.

My brother in laws are both electronics test engineers, and one repaired my Mk2 Cav Sri ECU. He carefully removed it from the box, and very methodically checked for dry soldered joints under a microscope, then he checked that all the components, (resistors, capacitors, diodes etc) worked as they should, then he spotted that one of the spade connectors was showing a little corrosion. He removed that, tinned the surface with solder and when reconnected in the car, it ran perfectly. lol
Just watched it and the whole thing was a massive farce, i'd even question some of the "correct" answers in that interview lol

haha what made me laugh in that interview is where they say about the things being cheap, and he says that it can run better...

And ? They were all perfect ?
one gap was a little too big, but i sorted that, but i wouldnt say they are all perfect, becuase like you said in your previous post

haha what made me laugh in that interview is where they say about the things being cheap, and he says that it can run better...
He was actually on the right track with it burning 'better' (although better is a very vague way of putting it) it'd ignite too fast with the stock ignition timing and cause the engine to knock... the other guy talked round the whole subject and then said loss of power and they marked him right for it.
Also overboosting engines into limp mode, I've not owned a turbo engine before, but would it not just cut the fuel or ignition. Depending on the ECU used of course, which is why it's a crap question, but if all the sensors etc are giving the correct diagnostic signals etc, surely it would fuel cut rather than go into limp?
I never watched it!

all plugs should be gapped because they could of been dropped before you got them and closed the gap,
if these lads are as useless as use say id hate to see them do the irish fas apprentice programme and the apprenticeship of the year competition, there uber hard

yes, my turbo cuts spark when it overboosts

The pros are mroe than welcome to come to sunny warrington and hear the annoying buzzer that emits from the dash board when it boost cuts lol

not quite that bad, just see the car kangaroo with flames coming out of the exhaust lol
Boost cut FTW.
Fcuk gapping plugs. I dropped one of the nova ones on the floor when I was cleaning it, picked it up, eye-measured it against one of the others. Looked fine so put it in, nae bother lol
[edit] BBC3 running late it seem - FG til 12:20
cant beleave you lot lol. takes maximum of 30 seconds to check the gaps on plugs. its known as doing things properly ;)
gap them by eye... I find its good enough :)
the plugs I get from vaux are twin electrode and pregapped. by eye they are the same for each plug :) As said, its to prevent spastic fitters from getting it wrong in dealerships/production lines.

the guy that won deserved to win it but yet he was definitely not mechanic of the year. Lots of people on here do full rebuilds on their cars at 17 and 18 years old. I could of done what they have done and ive only worked on cars for a year.
There was hardly any mechanic skills used. It was all about plugging things back in! i think the final challenge should of been an engine rebuild in half a day and then race the cars!
What a complete farce!
lol @ the hidden kill switch, the turnips that were putting it in the engine bay. I'm not sure I'd trust them as mechanics, they'd probably put the spark plugs in upside down
lol watched it last night , we are in for some very **** car repairs in the future lol

Mr dog did you enjoy it? lol
I always gap plugs by eye on NA engines. I would recommend gapping them properly on Tubbys though :)
it was crap as already said.not impressed.

They were all fitters apart from the aa dude who would have had to deal with those things daily, like plugs falling out and shorting electrics...

Actually, I'd agree with that. The last time I did the spark plugs on the GT4 I checked the gaps with my dad's feelers (stop sniggering at the back).
BUT that was mainly because its a pain in the **** to get all the chargecooler up out the way if I realised I needed to take them out again. At least on an N/A engine they're right in front of you atop the engine, takes about 5 seconds to get them out lol
Ive never checked plug gaps on any plug ive put in my engines lol lol
They come pre-gapped and with a solid cylinder thing around the electrode so it cant get damaged etc if dropped in the box.....
And ive got to get me one of those air filters and backboxes!!! lol lol

Is it me but does that not make any sense lol
Does to me :p

^ I have to move the chargecooler out the way to change the plugs. I are lazy lol
Makes perfect sense to me? lol
On his gt4 he checked the gaps so he didnt have to remove the CC etc etc to remove the plugs if he found out later the gaps were wrong.
Wheres on a NA engine the plugs are a lot more accessible, so easier to remove just incase you want to check the gaps later on for some reason?? (in terms of vauxhall engines anyway)
Ah the bit i was missing was he agreed with Lee, i thought it said disagreed with that and then went on to say how useful it was to gap them on the GT4.
My bad.

that program was ****e, they are all useless main dealer fitters, they wouldnt have the 1st clue about proper mechanics! it should have been called young fitter of the year award!
replacing wiper blades and air filters would have been challenging enough for most of them!
this really pissed me off lol! And since when does crying your eyes out make you a good mechanic????????

ps, id have kicked all the side windows out and lobbed the tailgate on the floor for the drag race, change the plugs 'after gapping' then loobed those barry boy ripspeed bits in the skip

Top geeza IMHO!
