its not by the gearbox, thats where i looked 1st. theres a load of random numbers but no engine code. and it hasnt corroded away because the rest of the numbers are clear to see
Try some emery tape across that area, its got to be there

well theres no engine code anywhere on the engine so i can only assume the guy fitted a 1.6 and got rid of the engine code as its supposed to be a 1.4.....
or its a 1.4 and he wanted to lie and say it was a 1.6
No sticker on the cambelt cover? (assuming it has the original covers) No part number or anything on the block?

no stickers on the covers. there are some random numbers on the block yeah, but then theres just a blank where the engine code should be.
and it was sold to me as a 1.4 so i highly doubt someone would go through all that hassle to get rid of an engine code just so they could say they had a 1.6 lol
If its the original engine, do any insurance quote on it and t should tell you there..
Infact slap you number plate in here : http://www.taxdisc.direct.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/
