hello peeps, iv'e just joined recently and really could do with some advice, iv'e currently got a 1300 SR which ive done quite a bit of work on, got a four branch (wrapped) ashley manifold, ashley competition exhaust, stage 2 fast road head, magnecor 8mm leads super 4 plugs, and did have the dreaded pierburg 2E3 carb (since binned in favour of 40 DCOEs). When my stage 2 head got clogged up, after alot of thinking iv'e decided to go for a new engine while i work on the 1300, with 1300s being hard to get hold of iv'e got my hands on a C14SE out of a mk3 astra, which i'm planning on running my 1300 stage 2 head (eventually) and weber 40s on, the problem i have is/are... the distributor on the 1400 doesn't have a connection for the small HT lead from the coil, and the 1400 cam carrier doesn't have a hole for the fuel pump to run off the cam or to be bolted to (i know an electric fuel pump would be preferable but i want it to run slightly lean because of the standard bottom end) my plan is to take the cam carrier off my 1300 engine and put it onto the 1400 engine, to run my original 1300 dizzy and fuel pump, could someone tell me how possible this is, and any problems that might occur, cheers people, muchos appreciated...

is anyone following my progress?!! :tard: the engine is very nearly ready to go in now, all ive got to do is fit the 1300 flywheel and clutch and it'll be in and running soon after that...

i had thought about that, im not going to give it proper beans until i get at least some ARP bolts on the bottom end... im already on my third engine in 5 years and getting bored of having to have it off the road and still having to insure it...

shes a bit of an old shed at the moment, purely down to cashflow, just finished a college course and its proving difficult to get a job round here, me and a mate are going to get it in his car port before long to do a bit of a budget blow over, probably have newish doors, wings, rear arches/quarters and bonnet, it could do with it... more go than show is my philosophy! :d

oh, and the flush boot is going in the bin, hopefully to reveal the original SR vinyl, with grey spoiler and smoothed grey bumpers, number plate back in the bootlid with the handle ditched and holes welded up, and probably some GTE skirts, in the same grey as the bumpers, and a set of 15" Rota slipstreams in gunmetal grey...
engine looks swish matey get the sr back to standard!

i dropped a clanger... like a tw*t, ive tried to get the engine in from the bottom up, then found an anti roll bar... i dont know what route to take now... im thinking do i take the anti roll bar off and guide it up, or take it back out from under the car and go back to the drawing board... engine crane is the only way methinks...
Mk1'SR'Dan
03-12-09, 05:39 PM
ive now got the Anti-Roll Bar off, looking like the engine should just lift up a bit now and go straight in... hopefully ive eyed the clutch centrally enough... it went straight in the last time i changed the lump, hopefully my luck hasnt changed on that front... does anyone know if you can buy the clips that hold the clutch plate onto the drive plate? i might need some of those...

hello folks, time for an update, i went and hired an engine crane yesterday after my (seemingly stupid) gantry 'idea' went t*ts up, i already had the engine under the car, so i jacked it up, tried to line it up with the drive spline and no, wasnt having it, so i raised it up out of the bay, took the clutch cover plate off and loosened the clutch bolts, lowered it back in and it self centred nicely, got it bolted up and the drivers side mount back on, then started to put stuff back on, got the dizzy on, dont ask me why i started there cos i dont even know, then the starter motor, this is where it all went wrong... and i found out im going to need a new gearbox. but, i still plan to build it up, put everything back on and bump start it to get it running... while i wait for the F13 to get here...

ive got the engine all built up now, done everything except put the cam belt and fan belt on, oil, coolant and a bit of 99 go-go juice and she should be running, bump starting or not! although, id advise anyone thats thinking of getting an inlet manifold and alternator lowering bracket from on-line autosport to invest in an angle grinder at the same time, i got it all pretty much done today, and then went to measure up for the new (shorter) fan belt and realised that the fan blades of the alternator hit the bracket, and id imagine the fan belt is going to hit it too, so i had to take the alternator back off again, ive got to take the grinder to it, nightmare... does anyone think that bump starting a freshly built engine is a really un-wise thing to do? anyway, some pics of my cooling system that i had to make...! good job im a plumber and know my pipework!

looks good dude, bump it in 2nd gear you will be fine

i was going to do it in 4th to try and keep it calm...?
Novaboi_1991
11-12-09, 04:17 PM
id say second too.. 4th your gonna need some speed before itll bump..
i used to bump my loon in first... then again i didnt have much room, about 20ft, and only a slight downhill... so, its up to you mate... bet its gonna sound awesome with those carbs
EDIT : or get a starter motor? lol
Mk1'SR'Dan
11-12-09, 04:25 PM
ill do that then, im just a bit worried cos it'll be the first time its been started since rebuilding it... and cheers novaboi, i cant wait for the noise!! might make not having a car for a month or two and about 800 quid worthwhile! ive got two starter motors, just wont work on the F10 box or the 1300 flywheel... gutted... F13 on its way...!
Was just going to ask why are you bump starting it but i forgot about your flywheel/box troubles, id wait till youve sorted that out and it will start of its own accord as you really want to turn it over without plugs in to get oil round it, or dribble some oil down the bores then turn it over, again with no plugs in it:thumb:
Mk1'SR'Dan
11-12-09, 05:19 PM
cheers spud, i think im going to leave it, as much as it pains me to not hear it, id much rather not muller it after all that... im just glad i ride too, so ill stick to the bike for a bit longer... in the mean time, im thinking of modifying one of my starter motors, i can see the flywheel through the hole, but the aluminium bit on the starter motor would need adapting to reach it, might be a temporary measure... but it is definitely going to have a starter motor of some description, cheers for the advice about getting the oil pumping round without the plugs in, id probably have overlooked that, and looked an absolute be*lend when it seizes up...!
I was just about to say... DONT BUMP START IT. Your want to make sure the oil is all around it (oil light on dash will go out), then start it. Many engine probs can be caused in the early process.
Mk1'SR'Dan
11-12-09, 09:50 PM
yeah im definitely going to leave it for a while now lads, patience is a virtue! cant be dealing with another fooked engine...
im loving the look of this some great work there keep the updates coming.
+rep for keeping it small block.

nice one Rick, got to love the small block, no doubt ill do bigger builds in my time, id like to get a workshop like so many of the peeps on here and actually go into business doing road/rally prepping, from 1300s to LETs so theres hundreds of brutal little rally cars caning it round Eastbourne keeping the plod busy...! i should be getting a gearbox relatively soon, so ive got to go through all that again, going to be worth it though...

that was a good build, but really bulky, the main bit was 20mm MDF, the shelf was reinforced with 18mm MDF, even the shelf cheek original speaker holes were blocked up with MDF, was all a bit changing rooms for my liking so i chipped the majority of it off, especially as the fabric ive used to upholster it is sensitive to sunlight, so ive got to redo all 4 'door cards', and the new install, so much to do and the interior is well and truly on the back burner atm...! cheers for the feedback :)

hello folks, its been a while, a depressing while... after getting the engine in and realising the gearbox was wrong, ive since got my hands on an F13 bell housing which im going to fit my F10 transmission into, but, now i cant get a (290mm approx) flywheel for it because the bloke i bought the engine off has flogged it to someone else... annoyance... so while im waiting for one to turn up (if anyone on here could help it would be awesome) im mirror polishing the F13 bell housing so it looks alot better when its bolted to the new engine, thats going well, id post some pics but my proper phome is sh*gged and the temporary one is w*nk... also got my interview for the foundation degree in motorsport engineering... result..!!

hello peeps, i finally got the old shed running, got a flywheel on saturday, had that and hew clutch on and had the gearbox rebuilt and fitted by that afternoon, got some gearbox oil and petrol earlier and got it going, now for the teething troubles... one of my carbs is a little bit sticky and doesnt close off properly, so it runs really fast unless you physically pull the throttle closed, hopefully with a bit of adjustment of the throttle linkage should sort that out, another thing was (hopefully cured now) is that the fuel seems to be pre-detonating in the inlet manifold, hopefully i havnt damaged the mis-abs too much, bit of a tweek up hopefully cured that, another thing is the return fuel pipe, im not sure what to do about it, because im only running the mechanical pump until ive strengthened the bottom end up im wondering if i need to have a return until i get some ARP bolts in the rods and ive got a facet pump? its backfiring so im guessing its just about running rich enough, although i think it'd hunt a bit higher revs, if anyone could help with my above issues i would be eternally grateful!!
