Advance your timing, low tick over and low power say dizzy timing needs advancing
what way do you turn it to advance towards front of car or rear

retard the timing?....
just turn it the way that makes the revs go up to what they should be, then test it lol
john just done it and its a million time better even though the garage said the timing was rite cheers and have some rep

Base timing may have been right, has the diaphram in the vacuum advance/retard unit been checked?
If it is bust, you have compensated for it by moving the base timing, really needs the advance/retard unit changine, assuming all the pipe work if correct.
My sport ran really poorly when I got her but was OK with revs on, unburnt fuel and high HC levels.
When I got her rolling roaded found the advance retard unit was US and base timing had been set at 34 degs to compensate;)
All fixed now though:thumb:
yeah i was told about the vacuum/advance and am goin to have i checked next week to see if its workin cheers for the info

Have you got a timing gun?
Quick and simple way to check the vacuum advance on the dizzy is to remove the vacuum pipe and "suck" You should feel resistance and possibly a click as the diaphragm reacts.
No resistance at all.....diaphragm fooked.
You can do it with the engine running, you will hear the engine tone change slightly as you suck the vacuum pipe....confirming its doing its job

is it a pierburg 2E3 carb? i had exactly this problem on my 1300 and found out that not only was the choke sh*gged but he vacuum advance diaphragm had split which made the timing well dodgy and it did backfire quite a bit, but advancing it will help, i had to do it to get it through an MOT...
