Air in the system, squeeze the pipes to expell it, with the header tank cap off. Leaves in the matrix, remove the heater motor to gain acess IIRC.

Fit a xe, warms up alot quicker. Or fit a let, then its warm by the end of the read.

seriously, the heater matrix is probably full of residue & shiite, it would benefit from flushing out.. then do the rest of the cooling system & sort out a new stat just to be sure.. my 1.6 has a diesel stat which runs cooler than a petrol one, and it still warms up really quick

First port of call, is the cable that moves the flap ontop the matrix actually operating the flap to the fully hot position?

In my experience, 80's vauxhalls in general suffer really crap heating. Even with a new Valeo matrix in my GSi, it still only gets moderately hot, even with the XE turbo. My old 1.2i was terrible however. Even a 100mile drive would barely have the cabin toasty. Pretty sure the stat was open or absent on that engine.

Anyway, my advice is remove the matrix to flush it. To do it properly takes ages & can't really be done with the pipes halfway up the bulkhead. Lastly renew the stat which is a pain on the old 8v's with it behind the cam pulley. & try an additive perhaps.

Failing all the above, Steal a Nova, then it's hot!

cheers guys i will investigate it when its not raining and light lol.

and lol to the XE, LET and V6 comments.

it does warm up quite hot after about 10-15 mins, now is this me being inpatient? or is it slow lol

its a nova thing, my other car is blowing hot air (or was before it was stripped for speed) halfway to work, and works only two miles away

by the way, the electric heaters are crap

Change the thermostat, its easy on the 1.2s, flush out the coolant system and put some fresh in. The last winter I had mine I blocked off the half of the radiator that the fan doesn't cover with a black bin bag and some ducktape. It warmed a lot faster but didn't overheat.

mine works beautiful, heats up after about 5 minutes, if that some days. i thort mine was slow compared to some cars but obviously not :D

That isnt too bad for a Nova IMO.

Probably the best feature on a Saxo is that somehow the heating is hot after barely 30seconds of engine running. Quite impressive IMO.

i reckon it wouldnt be to hard to fit an matrix an blower from another car
but no one has tried it yet

^^ but it will still only get as hot as the coolent running round it , dont forget the matris is only like a house radiator

Simple one, but is it piped up right?

Hose from side of head to matrix yeah?

bmw156
18-11-09, 06:56 PM
benn, the hoses have never been removed, still the same original engine etc. only ever removed to front coolant hoses.

Drive it hard then, i can fire up the cav, kick its teeth in from cold and 20psi later hey presto its hot lol

In all fairness if its warming up after about 10-15 mins then thats about right, i dont hink novas heaters are too bad in all fairness so man up and put something warmer on clothing wise :p

bmw156
18-11-09, 09:02 PM
lol ok, if the 10-15 mins is normal, then yeh im gonna have to man up.

others, how long does it take for your heaters to heat up, with a normal sized engine :P

got an xe nova, and for some reason when the heater knob is on hot, cold air comes out of the driver and middle vents, and warm air comes out of the passenger vent :S lol

Will always be cold from the center vents.

I'd personally do the matrix flush, rad flush, and new thermostat. Made a hell of a difference to my dads Cav when I changed the thermostat.

My Nova heats up sub 7mins and gets hot enough to thank the Lord of Opel that they left the centre vents to always flow fresh cooler air otherwise I'd probably die of dehydration.

I'd do that then see how it is :thumb:

Have you checked the cable? Just cos the knob shows red/heat doesnt mean the flap above the matrix is routing hot air into the dash ducts.

Forever!
