A sheet load of elbow grease, wire brush for the drill, primer and Hammerite. Brush and mini rollers used. All done with car sat on axle stands.

Kurust, etch primer, seam sealer, anti-rust primer, stonechip, Hammerite smooth white.
Went for plain black on mine. Some sort of underseal, rubbery stuff.

On the Orange one i striped back some problem places with a wire brush, treated with crust, then red oxided them then applied one layer of under seal to all areas, then put two more full coats on the hole underside, behind the wings/inners wings, rear arches hole front end etc etc..

Great thread!
Lee's seems to be a top job. What was it you used? The rubbery texture sounds pretty durable.
Gonna start mine soon, but its really clean underneath with the otiginal pvc underseal still good. So I'm debating what to do, but it will be in black.
White will just get freaking dirty as soon as it rains and you drive in the wet.
White will get dirty even if you only use it in the dry lol
Shoula said earlier, petes one im really liking, it looks soo smooth and perfect lol

Still if you have some rotten areas or loose parts on the underseal/stone guard i would strip it back, as my mate found out it also hides rot you dont know about! look in his wip, mike c123 turbo project.
Scott
i dont have any pics on the computer but i burnt ALL underseal off, zippy wheeled the full shell til it was like brand new metal, then gave it 4/5 coats of red oxide primer. It was due to be gravitexed but i then sold the shell due to having to move.I will do the same again soon......................................

Schultz is also what i used, i recommend i aswell.
Looking good Benn, is that thing there for hiding the wires and stuff ?
Then 3m rubberised sealant is the best stuff going. Ive used it on loads of cars and mine..lol
Yeah its all wiring and breather/boost hose's

what order would you use schutz then? etch primer, seam seal then schutz?

i just cleaned mine down with wire wheel on grinder and then shultzed it.
nice good thick coats on it though.
wire wheeled it to bare metal? if so that would help save alot of money the way i was going to.
I know were talking Novas, so theres bound to be some rust prevalent on the underside somewhere! What I've used in the past on my vectras and astras is Autosmart Tardis, sprayed onto the old underseal softens it up a treat to allow a plastic scraper to be used to clean it off. Leaves the factory primer coat intact and a good base for extra primer or fresh underseal. Will try and get some pics up later

I do some where, it needs to be sprayed from a compressor tho.
I do some where, it needs to be sprayed from a compressor tho.
thats one problem id face if i wanted to use it.
Yeah and you need to buy the gun attachment. Sure you could mix it up (its 2pac) and brush it on tho..
hmmm.... im stuck what to do now. was going to do it how iainel has done his but unsure now...
Get a good under seal then paint over the top.
is the waxoyl pressurised can any good?

that stuff doesnt dry out tho
As said, it says wet as its tar based. Good if its the finishing coat. Bad if you wanna paint over it.

I too can vouch for Schultz stuff (sprayable) Did the undersizde of my dads Cav, rubbed down rusty areas, kurust, acid etch primer and loads of Schultz, it sprays lumpy protectivness and dries to a matt finish. The MOT man (who is a grumpy moaner) absolutly loved the underside of it.
Will be doing a thourough check on the Nova soon (hopefully) and geting it well protected.

not a problem mate got a big old compressor at home. does it attach to a schultz gun? if you could dig out the part number and pm me please that would be great.

You buy a gun/get a gun that attaches to the bags the sealant comes in..

all the underseal was wire wheeled/burnt off on mine, then zinc primered, primed and painted black

once the new sill have been put on will be re-painted and then undersealed eith some sort (prob the 3m stuffnow)
The best job I ever did see was on a Fiesta RS, flawless but that thread dissapeared a long time ago ! I'll ask on PF to see if its still about as it was a very detailed thread in how he restored it and the underside.
Good to see there are people actually spending the time doing the underside of a nova ! all fine and well painting the top but they always rot from the bottom upwards !

I had a mag that's got a 206 in it, its been painted in marble look paint on the whole of the under side.. Sh?*t car but the work thats gone in to it is unreal!
I think that is what you need to respect sometimes, wether you like the car or not some people do a amazing job on restorations, its all in the attention to detail
Hell yes, its stuff like that that makes a car. Love your mates one, under side is soooo clean and tidy.
Draper, will you not damage alot of your hard work when you put a sill on?
does this shultz gun connect to a normal airline?
gives a really good matt finish so think thats the route im gonna take :d

Front end - all old underseal removed with knotted wheel on grinder, seams welded, all red oxide primed, seam sealer, stonechipped arches and front panel, all painted in diamond black and laquered. Its a lot of pics but its nice to see how people do it, so heres mine.

Back - throughly cleaned first.. then let dry... also good and strong structurally but there was a hole behind each shock on the inner arches, so the rust was cut out and new metal welded in... I also stripped the rear chassis legs back to bare metal just to check them, they were ok, so I red oxide primed areas that I had touched, stonechipped them, then gave the whole back end two layers of ye olde underseal.

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd139/leeberto/S4010462.jpg
Also made sure and cleaned, primed and undersealed right up to the edge of the rear arch lips.
Didn't bother touching the floorpan as the old rust protection is still doing its job ok.
the pic of the front end of the above looks HOT !!!
shultz is deffinetly the way forward. its only £12 for the gun and then £4 per tub/pot/tin whatever they technically are
any more pics and suggestions?
