First of all i completley stripped the old underseal. Welded what was needed. Treated with 5 coats (5 litres) of red oxide.

I then undersealed it twice just incase. Fancy painting it smooth black now :)

On the Orange one i striped back some problem places with a wire brush, treated with crust, then red oxided them then applied one layer of under seal to all areas, then put two more full coats on the hole underside, behind the wings/inners wings, rear arches hole front end etc etc..

Great thread!

Lee's seems to be a top job. What was it you used? The rubbery texture sounds pretty durable.

Gonna start mine soon, but its really clean underneath with the otiginal pvc underseal still good. So I'm debating what to do, but it will be in black.

White will just get freaking dirty as soon as it rains and you drive in the wet.

Still if you have some rotten areas or loose parts on the underseal/stone guard i would strip it back, as my mate found out it also hides rot you dont know about! look in his wip, mike c123 turbo project.

i dont have any pics on the computer but i burnt ALL underseal off, zippy wheeled the full shell til it was like brand new metal, then gave it 4/5 coats of red oxide primer. It was due to be gravitexed but i then sold the shell due to having to move.I will do the same again soon......................................

I know were talking Novas, so theres bound to be some rust prevalent on the underside somewhere! What I've used in the past on my vectras and astras is Autosmart Tardis, sprayed onto the old underseal softens it up a treat to allow a plastic scraper to be used to clean it off. Leaves the factory primer coat intact and a good base for extra primer or fresh underseal. Will try and get some pics up later

I too can vouch for Schultz stuff (sprayable) Did the undersizde of my dads Cav, rubbed down rusty areas, kurust, acid etch primer and loads of Schultz, it sprays lumpy protectivness and dries to a matt finish. The MOT man (who is a grumpy moaner) absolutly loved the underside of it.

Will be doing a thourough check on the Nova soon (hopefully) and geting it well protected.

The best job I ever did see was on a Fiesta RS, flawless but that thread dissapeared a long time ago ! I'll ask on PF to see if its still about as it was a very detailed thread in how he restored it and the underside.

Good to see there are people actually spending the time doing the underside of a nova ! all fine and well painting the top but they always rot from the bottom upwards !

Front end - all old underseal removed with knotted wheel on grinder, seams welded, all red oxide primed, seam sealer, stonechipped arches and front panel, all painted in diamond black and laquered. Its a lot of pics but its nice to see how people do it, so heres mine.

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd139/leeberto/SP_A1871.jpg

Back - throughly cleaned first.. then let dry... also good and strong structurally but there was a hole behind each shock on the inner arches, so the rust was cut out and new metal welded in... I also stripped the rear chassis legs back to bare metal just to check them, they were ok, so I red oxide primed areas that I had touched, stonechipped them, then gave the whole back end two layers of ye olde underseal.

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd139/leeberto/S4010451.jpg

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd139/leeberto/S4010462.jpg

Also made sure and cleaned, primed and undersealed right up to the edge of the rear arch lips.

Didn't bother touching the floorpan as the old rust protection is still doing its job ok.
