i had a mk 4 GSI, i would say get one.

but be prepared to have a little faults along the way

afm.
boost solinoids.
turbo.

are all prone to go regardless of millage.

VERY good mpg tho, used to get 40mpg on a long run.

Had a mk4 Astra Coupe 1.8, kept it standard.

Fell for the looks rather than the practicalities of it, visibility was crap (A-pillars are huge) and no rear wiper, had a few problems such as rear springs shearing, power sounder unit needed replacing, wiper mechanism was very weak.

In the end haven't regretted getting one, but I wasn't too bothered when I traded it in earlier this year.

I have a 888 Coupe turbo, great engine that pulls well and is very smooth(I am used to driving a BMW everyday aswell!). The Coupes are surprisingly practical with a massive boot and good rear leg room. Build quality is very good aswell.
I have not had any problems with mine, having said that it has only done 5,800 miles in 7 years!

Depending on your budget, go for the 2.2 Coupe.

The Z22SE is solid and bullet proof, no issues that Edd describes.

Unless you want Forced Induction.

So far...One turbo and manifold, 2 lambda senors, 2 AFM's, an ecu, a gearbox, head off, full clutch kit, crank sensor...the list goes on.
Its still shonkyish

My mate just got a 1.8, pulls pretty well for engine size, comfortable car and quiet inside. His is lowered 40mm on Astra GSi wheels and the ride is still pretty good.

There was a recall on them for uprated oil feed and tensioner, not sure if that sorted the problem or if they are still prone to faults. I know they can make quite a rattle after a while but that was mostly quite high mileage engines i've heard that on. To make sure there are no problems with the oil feed you need to change the oil at the specified intervals and use decent oil in it too.

So why not just get them from Mtech and cut LMF out of there 20%?
