Been recommended to remove the oil gallery bolts to clean the block out thoroughly. I assume these are the allen key headed bolts behind the waterpump and behind the flywheel.

They seem quite tight and I'm a little worried about rounding them off, do they usually come out easily? Are they a special size?

Cheers!

OK cheers, just a bit worried as a size 7 fitted nicely but looked as if it was going to round it off when I applied pressure.

You'd just dump the engine in without stripping it down at all though lol

As suspected it has rounded off, any suggestions?

either leave it, or get a drill into it followed by a stud extractor

rather than use an allen key use an allen key socket set

I have a draper set, and its saved me a few times, got it from the motor factors

as for your problem use a torx bit on it...one you don't want

I was using an allen key socket on a breaker bar.

I've tried hammering a Torx bit in to it and it's just made it even more round. lol

time for my method, oh & have you applied some heat to it? sometimes you need to get them glowing to loosen the loctite

erm lol

well if i was sensible, i'd take the drill and stud extractor option, being me, i'd weld a bolt onto it, and unbolt it lol

It's not happy Benn it's hiding lots of grime that needs cleaning lol

Mowgli I'd attack it with heat but I've just been cleaning the engine with degreaser and paraffin so maybe not the best idea at the mo!?

Ok cheers all, I'll drill and stud extractorise it.

And you wont get it all out, only way is to dip it to clean in.

leave it in, your asking for trouble IMO

Agreed, i've never had one of these out. It's an XE, it'll be fine!

Well it's not going well, used a screw extractor tool on it (drill a hole and reverse thread thing) and it managed to snap off inside the bolt.

Told you leave it alone.......

iain, its probably a good time to think about taking it to the local engine recon workshop & getting them to sort it out.

I bet you wrenched on it like a stiff tap, hardened tool steel needs a carefull hand.
