tbh most XE's have had a hard life so look for genral wear and tear. check the condition of oil etc and see if there is any history with it. if your rebuilding anyway you will be fine

dont worry too much about a little oil leaking as they all seem to do that !

Mine is also a bit tappy on start up, so was my Astra Gte and a freind cav GSI

unless its in a car running, all you can really do ist turn it over make sure its free and has compression.

If it is running, tapping on start up is quite normal on most, if its still tapping once hot theres a problem.

yep mate check for any normal knocks bangs etc tapping on start up is normal but usually goes away when cold. Check for blue smoking etc

check for a cocast head, they are worth alot more then normal heads.

there are a few easy ways to check, but do some research

+ the cocast heads dont go porous, when the oil and water mix, if its not a cocast head. ask if it has had the oilway modification done to it

the KS head dosent go porous either!!!!!! it cracks. There is a world of difference.

lol

One day I will start a thread that is purely you moaning about the KS/porous debate!

In terms of the engine, if you cant see it running, there isnt a great deal to look for!
