Hi all, my girlfriends car fail its mot on the front lower suspension ball joint! The garage has quoted to replace the whole front lower arm! I am going to do the work myself to save on labour charges. My question is how hard is it to replace just the ball joint? Is it better to replace the whole lower arm as the garge has quoted for?

Cheers dave

prob just as easy to replace whole arm. you will find the oe is studs and not bolts holding the balljoint to the arm. where as the new ball joint would bolt to your old arm

Haha...

get friendly with the branch, I think my staff discount would put that at about £25, based on a 50% margin.

right. here goes.....

no.1 a lower arm is by far the quickest, safest & in the long run, cheapest option.

you are asking us about a safety critical component. suspension failure is not a pretty sight.

if you drill & bolt up a ball joint, then it needs some careful measurement & drilling to get correct.

you will need to get the tracking & camber checked/adjusted because it will be out whether you fit an arm or a ball joint

what did the garage quote???????

Oh, and it is spelt 'Thanks'

So how come you couldnt put that the first time? The garage quoted £88 for the arm and £50 fitting. My logic was that the ball joint is dead not the arm so why replace the arm when all that is needed is a £15 ball joint. Like i said as it seems it is easier to fit the whole arm so thats what i will do. Basicaly wasnt sure if the garage was trying to rob my misses by replacing the whole arm when just the ball joint is dead! Thabks lol

i still stand by my first comment.

but £88 is way too much for an arm in my opinion
