Your have to use a bit of force, be very careful though.

Assuming its a Mk2, undo the dash bolts (4x screws, 2x bolts and the one at the bottom) and you can lift the dash which helps a lot if you're really struggling. The plastic is pretty flexible, so don't be too worried about it breaking. Plus, if you DO break it, top halves are easy to find as when the cars get nicked/hotwired/etc its only the bottom half which gets torn off and broken so they are more in demand.

If its a Mk1, just rip the whole lot out and burn it, then replace with lovely Mk2ness :)

I just took the steering wheel off at the bottom of the column and the stalks, i found it better than risking breaking it
