View Full Version : Thermostat problems

i want to get a few more opinions on this before i go and change it, but im thinking that my thermostat is stuck open. The engine never gets up to operating temperature unless im sitting in traffic (or just idling, but takes a long time to reach O.T). but as soon as i start to move again it cools down. Even when im going less than 20, it still cools it down. if the thermostat is stuck open, then there's constantly water flowing through the radiator, and therefore always being cooled down by the air hitting it. Also, its terrible on fuel. Thermostat would explain this too, because if its cold all the time then more fuel will be dumped in won't it? So from what ive explained, does this sound like thermostat problems?
change it anyway, there about £5.

It does sound like it, only way to see if it cures it is to change it. Like AW06 said they are very cheap so if you're not sure when it was last done do it now and see if it improves.
swap the stat, then the head gasket will probably show signs of failure......

Moral of the story... don't fix the stat so the headgasket doesn't show signs of failure lol

all novas have crap stats & head gaskets, and if one has been running v cold for a good while, then once it warms up again, the crappy head gasket will usually leak... statement of fact based on nearly a quarter of a century of irrationally hanging round novas

ive got the new thermostat but ive been reccommended that i need to change the cam belt too, because you shouldnt replace with the same cam belt? and also, the same bloke said that the water pump will need replacing because when you un-tension it, it will leak.

Cam belt yes deffinate, change it, never reuse one. As for the waterpump when did you last change it? If you can't remember then you might as well get that sorted too, less agro in the near future. The pump wont leak or go wrong when you change the cambelt but if it's old it will go wrong sooner rather than later. I'd get them all done, prob cost you max of £30 quid for those parts.

I got my water pump from halfords QH part for £18 and a cambelt for about £8 ( 1.2 carb)
made a hell of a difference to the engine, the waterpump was shot anyway made a racket, after it was fitted it sounded so quiet so much nicer to drive.

halfords didnt sell the cam belt  aparently. And the water pump was £30. Went elsewhere and got the water pump for 25, and the cambelt for 12. but then my CV joint fooked and the car won't drive :(

Oh dear, hate coming across a new problem when I go about trying to sort out another one. At least you got those parts. Time for new CV joints too then I guess.

Typical issues that happen to older cars tbh, it's one thing after the other. I spent £64 on a brand new fuel sender for the petrol tank from vauxhall. Go to pick it up and ended up with a blown head gasket on the way home lol
These things happen mate www.carparts-direct.co.uk (http://www.carparts-direct.co.uk) do pretty cheap CV's.

if your doin that then you would be as well change the head gasket while your in that far. at least it wont need scimmed but like u guys say if you put the new thermo in then there is a good possibillitie that the gasket will blow then the head will need scimmed. more expense
