later year cars had a cat, and so the emissions from their engines are supposed to be lower
mine is supposed to have a cat but its got a straight through exhaust so that probally wont help lol
how would i be able to find out what car my engine came out of?

if its a G reg it WONT have a cat. only after 1992 had a cat. so even if your engine is 1992 you still wont need a cat as it goes by the older of the 2

just say it came out a cavalier.
so would my mechanic run the emissions for an older cavalier for the emissions in the m.o.t

yes.
Tell your MOT man to run the pre-BET test, it will be the same levels as if the car had the old 1.2 in it. If he's unsure, just tell him to put the reg in and the machine will tell him the values.
The emissions go by whichever is older, car or engine - if either is pre-1992, you have a less stringent emissions test. As your car reg is G, 1990, thats a win.
I would also strongly advise you to ask the MOT man to give the car a quick check over to make sure he's happy with the conversion, and to write you a small note to confirm that engine is now fitted to that car. You can then use this if the DVLA ask for evidence of the engine change, which they should do.
At my garage our emissions machine asks us for the year of the car think the last one is 1992-2009 so if the CAR comes into this bracket and doenst have a cat it will pretty much fail. IF he puts it in the i think its 1980 something - 1992 it wont require a cat and so therefore should pass aslong as its all running right and the emissions are accpetable for the year etc
