Still having trouble with my new engne.

it is an e16se, big valve/ported/polished/skimmed head, kent nvo62 cam, kent adjustable pulley, kent double valve springs, webber 40 dcoe's, 4 branch/exhaust..

what power should this be kicking out? i am not convinced that it is going as well as it should..

for those that dont know, i have had nothing but bother with the engine since fitting/building it.

to start things off the oil pump was seized and i didnt know about that (stupidly never replaced it), that then seized my cam and wrecked my cam box...

so new pump on then everything seemed fine, oil was coming up no probs..took it for a blast but she was overheating..

this was caused by not replacing the headgasket after stripping head back off to inspect cam seizure.. (was a new gasket when i first built it though)

i fired a head gasket/headbolts/timing belt, another oil filter and re-built it again last night..

got finished at around 9pm last night, thought i would take it for a good run.. well, i only got 18miles and i stopped just to check things was ok. when i opened the bonnet oil had spewed everywhere. the oil was all over the engine bay.checked the dipstick and luckily it was just showing by about a mm so it wouldnt have done any damage..

from a bit of head scratching and phonecalls (stan-the-man-2k4) we decided it was blown out the breather pipe from back of block..

now..my gsi (e16se) block has the old sr style breather bottle on insteadof pipe going upto the cambox? is this a problem? does the e16se need to have the crankcase breather connected into cambox?

i thought it might, so i made a pipe from crankcase breather to cam, this has stopped the oil coming out all over the engine bay..

but does it actually need to be connected in or should it be ok without it?

it also puts a bit of blue smoke out when you put your foot down?

done a compression test tonight and cylinder 1 has only got 60psi where as cylinder 2,3 and 4 has 170psi in each..

could this be my problem/s?

not going as well as what i think it should/blue smoke/ oil coming out breather??????

anything ring any bells?

please let me know anything that could help..

so far, we are thinking piston rings..

cheers

Greg

Piston rings im thinking, If its got low comp (with a new gasket) and its blowing oil out the breaters.

rings cracked maybe. or could of knackered gasket between oil/fire ring. does it still overheat?

either rings, damaged bore, or valves not seated properly would be your likely suspects mate

Hole in cyl one??

To breathe that much oil - it would have to be a mess in cylinder one!

Either way, needs stripping back down and rebuilding.

Properly with the correct breather configuration. I wouldnt be surprised if its just excess crank case pressure pushing the oil out of the breather, though that doesnt explain the low comp on cyl 1.

The later breather setup is better as it lets any oil coming up the breather pipe to drain back into the sump through the cam carrier, and then just fumes exit the rocker cover outlet. But it still shouldnt be breathing that heavy.
1.2/1.3/1.4 8v's use the old breather setup and there fine???...

Unless you are doing some mega revs causing it to kick a lot of oil up.

IIRC a nvo62 is a mega mild cam, designed for a std 8v injection engine.
Probably wont be making much over 120-125hp with that cam

tried dripping some oil into plughole no.1 and comp testing it again ?
if u get a higher / more normal reading it'll most likely be the rings, if not it'll be something higher up... edge of head gasket or valve related

Either way - head needs to come off. Be interested to see the state of the cylinder. Could just be ring failure.....

if you've only connected the crank case breather to the cam box, then it will not be breathing.. normally it would be piped to the filter box, but on a twin 40 setup, it would need an external breather filter rigging up.

as for no.1 cylinder, unfortunately you will need to whip the head off & have a poke about

nv062 it just the cam for a 1600 as in part number. the duration and type of cam will be wrote on the other side like the one i have.
