You sure, as I stole a set off an 87 Nova I had and they were the same as Mark's?

Griffin sticker instead of the raised one?

110% as my mk1 is totally original from the factory before i got it.

here's some pics from when i first bought it, you can see them in the shots.

maybe done when in for a service, it has the wrong bumper scott? I thought all the early specs had the smoother bumper?

scott.parker

Cant see how it's the "wrong" bumper, mine may been just on,close to a cross over time maybe that why Ive got old early parts, some slightly newer and some very strange additions to it (well they are to me, as Ive not seen them on allot of mk1's) If you have not seen the car before brows the thread in my sig.

Yes most do, but another few strange thins were mines got mk2 style mirrors, and fuel cap, but changed the cap already, I'll leave the mirrors, i see what your saying about the bumper and if i can get an early one i will change it, as i do prefer that style more then the 87-88 SR style.

See my for sale post mate ref bumper, probably find it got changed due to a minor scuff at soome point in its life, i may also be wrong and d plate could be right on the change and it could be original? Just from what i understand the line came in with the later mk1 spec

mirrors are a strange one as my b reg spider has the later style mirrors in an original 85 press picture i have of the exact car (i think it has any way, need to check)

Just checked the pic and my spider has the later mirrors,

http://www.pngclub.com/forum/showpost.php?p=836729&postcount=4

Link to the post above, that pic is original and circa 1985 or 86, sadly Tom May who knew the car personaly and was director or irmscher uk has passed away or else i could of asked

scott.parker
03-02-10, 11:25 PM
That is odd, or is that because it's base on an SR and not base spec?

There is/was some strange mix in parts through the years, and most the time it was all done none intentionally.

Ive no idea on the mirrors as to my understanding this is also my car

http://www.pngclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=137956

In the pics there, although not fitted with the irmscher interior there, i understand from tom told me that the interior was done at a later date. But something is saying to me that the spider in those pics may not be mine and that may be a sport converted, see the mirror blank and the interior in the pics, if that is the case then thats 7 known rhd spiders not the 6 i understood existed? Did a 84 or 85 sr have a passenger mirror?

I know of all 6 of the spiders

B**1MWD my car i think (need to check lol)
B**2MWD autocar featured car with fiesta, location unknown (may have the 2 b reg cars the wrong way round)
E**SFK belongs to my ex
E**SFK car that was on ebay and belongs to nova13sport on here
F300PUL the car dec spotted and was on mig (i have the owners details some where)
F414EWD my stolen car

The more i think about it, the more i think that could be a sport converted as the autocar car has the differnt interior (brown tartan with red and cream) and that matches in with a recent conversation with the sales manager at steve thompson cars lichfield about them driving 3 cars over to be converted, one of which someone spun on the m1 falling asleep at the wheel but no damage done. Hmmmm im off to seek more info tomorrow!

Totaly off subject now lol so the later style mirrors could of been available on a b/c reg is what im trying to say as i think its unlikely that anyone would of changed them from new on my car? Maybe the later style mirrors got fitted as standard to SRs?

Early sr's had adjustable mirror (later style) from the start ,but on the early ones passenger was an option they never had the sport style
not exactly sure what year a passenger mirror became standard 83 was option 85 was standard
hope this helps. Will check what was on 84 when I get home?
What year is yours?
Did all rhd spiders come with the full kit and injection ?

It doesn't look like a sport one

I got this mag today and have had a good look and it's definately an sr mirror

83 84 85 till the revamp(when 4/5dr launched) pass side mirror was a £29.90 option
after 85 revamp standard on sr's

hope this answers your questions

All base models had the small mirrors as the Sport had. (and the Sport was based on a base model) All others, L, GL and SR had the bigger mirrors. And the passenger one was not a standard equipment on L models

I had a b reg sr nearly 10 years ago completely original and it had "big mirrors" both sides as standard.

The spider I have is a B and is based on a 1.3 SR

The injection is an option along with the bodykit. Your car is how ever the only RHD car of the 6 I know that didnt have the kit and I have a copy of an old advert here that shows your car from the 80s. Advertising that the spideris now available with or with out the kit.

I have looked at the pic again and I was wrong abot the mirror, sleepy eyes got to me last night doh! Also checked and the interior on that spider is the same as the autocar car.

I have a copy of the custom car mag on its way to me but it seems to of gone missing in the post!!

Left hand drives I know of

!.Mitch's (still LHD with irmscher kit)
2.My old C reg (was non kitted but now is kitted and now RHD)
3.Robs LET spint kitted (now RHD with sprint Kit)
4.A random Blue xe on throttle bodies I have pics of some where (now RHD and mk2)
5.A white stand mk1 that came to billing in 2004 I think (no kit and RHD, been in uk for years and was for sale in total vauxhall around 2004)
6. Karl Gough's LHD (Still LHD and has a GTE kit)

so thats 12 spiders on UK soil that I know of......

worth also noting, I have had 3 or 4 spiders now (5 if you class the one I broke in germany) and there are 3 differnt typres of roofs

Slightly of topic but with all the wisdom here can someone tell me how much different a LHD bulkhead/firewall is from a RHD? I presume they are either the same or only slightly different in order to change from lhd to rhd.

Where the bars that go above the doors and onto the roll bar the part that fixes onto the roll bar is differnt, hard to explain but may be able to get some pics. I have a massive box here of new spider bits from irmscher i bought a few years ago. I got some spares that were differnt again to what I have here.

If your missing any bits let me know, the box is massive. Basicly had a list of bits for 1 and 2 euros each and I just basicly told Tom, Yeah 2 of each lol

Steering rack is the main thing where it goes through the bulk head. I didnt convert my car but it isnt hard to do.

Also the scuttle panel is differnt for the wipers. If you go for a single wiper on a LHD shell and smooth the wiper hole you will still be able to tell as the vent holes have differn numbers of vents if that makes sence?

I'd probably cut a scuttle panel out of a rhd shell and replace it on the new shell.

Update for today

The 4 pots used to rub on the inside of the wheel, so I've had some new brackets machined to mount the calipers out from the wheel and using larger discs for more stopping power.

The old discs are 256mm, but we will be running Meriva 280mm when finished.

Old and new brackets

Firstly sorry for the poor pictures, battery is flat in the Camera so all taken on my phone!

Got the coolant pipe back from my mate who waas fitted a water tempreture sensor into it, hidden nicely around the back so it still looks original on show

http://public.bay.livefilestore.com/y1phKe3QeCP09ydEOkOAm-pWG_S5jxbLbbD7t-eYDfxbU2NT1hnM7mnH-BO8vXrniTeePuawFSuLp1QMZ6J1V_n5w/2010-06-06%2010.32.37.jpg?psid=1

That ment the coolant pipes could go on and the throttle bodies etc. The yellow pipes are what was on pre rebuild. Still unsure on if they will go back to Black long term, but with the red throtttle bodies and the grey/silver bits of the engine etc they look quite well, basicly Red, Yellow and grey are the sport colours?!

after running ecu diagnostic checks on coil drive and injector drivers we established that it was a crank speed sensor fault of some sort. Checking continuity on the loom, removing the ecu connector and replacing with individual terminals, buying a new crank speed sensor checking the gap between the trigger wheel and sensor and slaving in various wires still did not fix the problem. The ECU was receiving no signs of rotation, finally last week Mark says he has found a wiring fault which was a short on the crank speed sensor loom, but so far it still hasnt (hopefully its that we are now low on fuel) but we are getting rotation now at the ecu. Marks hard work should pay up in the end, hopefully tomorrow we may find out..fingers crossed.

Heres a video from Feb 2003 from the initial mapping session for the fuel map, when the bodies were fitted. (I had been running DTA with the DCOE carbs before).
The weather was terrible with a record ice storm creating havoc on the roads which is why the car looks dirty and never made it home.
It was damaged less than a mile from my house after a 150 mile journey from velos.
I just love the way the bonnet lifts under load.. and the noise, the bodies dont have the rasp associated with the carbs otherwise sound very similar.
From what i remember the car was very driveable and as the video demonstrates you could put your foot down from 1000 rpm and it would pull. I likened it to driving a standard xe nova but without all the weight at the front.

30-08-10, 07:56 PM
Mark will confirm but I think the soft limiter is 6500 and hard limiter at 7200 (i dont have access to the map in front of me, I cant really remember but its somewhere in the sevens) its limited because its got hydraulic lifters and it would be a shame to machine the head to take solids.

vaughanmc
30-08-10, 08:04 PM
Aye that's true mate - Aslong as it's going good the way it is thats the main thing! :)

novacabrio
31-08-10, 09:21 PM
I've no idea on what the rev limiter is and i'm not going to go into the map to check as I don't want to hit a wrong button on it and wipe the map lol!

Spent the afternoon working on the car today after finding that not only did the crank sensor wire have a fault but so did the injector wires so once I realised that then it was relatively plain sailing to get it running again. Had it going today 2 or 3 times first turn of the key. So now its just a case of tidying all the wires back up and hiding them all again so you have to look twice to realise that the harness isn't standard. Also had to make plug leads today which have come out very well and look original.

Also ref the incident after the car having the throttle bodies fitted, the image below shows it back on 2003 and shows how slight (in my opinion anyway) the damage was, but being back in 2003 Paul was lucky enough to be able buy parts off the shelf with ease from Vauxhall.

IF YOU READING AT A GLANCE THIS PICTURE IS 2003!!! just before I get comments saying you've not crashed it have you? lol

http://public.bay.livefilestore.com/y1p2ExJ3bA0GaxM5jw90xQEvWQK0d3e1O5V6M2yZhj0GSaVQai AStVufkGbWpfsRullB1EGFG9b_Rp1l4-ra41Iuw/DSCF2839.jpg?psid=1

It won't get that dirty again!!! WILL IT PAUL!! lol

PaulW
31-08-10, 09:54 PM
It looks slight but an upright from the barrier hit the front panel right at the end of the chassis rail, the chassis rail absorbed the energy of the impact and there was a slight crease in the chassis rail and fire wall. The dirt was due to the winter weather, it used to get cleaned everyday I drove it. Anyone with White wheels knows one drive and they need a clean or they stain and need a jolly good polish. Summer only, dry only weekend only and at the moment driveway only car now! I guess mark you can enjoy a drive, dry weather drive to the mot station and enjoy the first legal drive of the car in seven years thanks to your hard work. Cheers Mark!!

No.. Why yellow? Bodies red engine grey and coolant hoses yellow, not intentional but they are the three sport colours and it works quite well. Small update, Ive been working in Sweden for a bit and got back on Monday. Tuesday, some small tasks done, new number plates ordered with original delivery dealer details on them, full set of classic black samco hoses ordered, which should please Mark. Just trying to decide which tyres to order. Toyo T1Rs are top of the list 195 45 15, considering it's quite a light car, has anyone run with 175 or 185 50 15 tyres, on a car expected to be driven hard? I remember driving my friend Ryan's nova on 185 50 14s profile tyres on steels and remember it feeling more responsive to the same car on 195 45 15s maybe due to unsprung weight? But is 195 too much tyre for a light car? I guess it's wishful thinking as I don't wont to grind the arches after repairing them, and the clearance is not what I thought it would be, dam rear beam tolerances. Jumping up and down on a rolling shell does not replicate suspension travel in a bend.. Got brand new falcons on it but we are guessing the steering wheel wobble at 60 mph is due to flat spots on the tyres, thanks to it sitting still for so long.
Last time we ran the car we experienced unreliable oil pressure indication, when it's hot it never get above minimum oil pressure however the oil light is not lighting up, when running. So it's not terrible (I hope.. its the low pressure light thats important.., I'm telling myself, as they mapped it on the dyno like that and it ws driven to London from Newcastle and back with questionable inidication) but it's concerning me. I got burnt by the the guy who completed the map on the engine, complete waste of money, went back to original map as it was on off throttle and rediculously over fuelling/ crazy high fuel consumption, so my next guess is bore wash and the oil has thinned with fuel. Does fuel in the oil sound reasonable to you guys? We have replaced the sensor and checked the earth to rule that out.
In order to do a bit of DIY mapping and keep an eye on lambda, which wideband sensor and controller do you recommend to work with a dta e48 ecu?
The idea is to visit Royston next week and pick the sport up from it's luxury resting place, thanks again Royston and drive it to newcastle to tidy a few things up at novacabrios.

Hi Paul, I would stick to a 185 width tyre. Its not just the size, its the make of tyre as some are wider than others and have bigger shoulders which are more likely to scrub.

What oil are you running in the engine? Have you had an independant oil pressure tester on it to check it? Is the pump known to be in good condition.
Does Mark have a spare set of clocks you can try as I would not rule out the guage being knackered.
I am running Castrol TWS Motorsport 10w60 oil and my needle sits all the way over to the right when cold and not much firther back when hot.

The SR goes off the clock cold and settles at the top of the scale when hot, on 10W40, isn't 10W 60 tooooooo thick, Richard?

Not sure if you quoted the wrong person but this one is not my Sport, its Paul's.
Mine is in the Sport section.

I have had seats repaired in the past using a passenger seat for material to make it as original. I use a trimmer in Derby called Stan Chilton, they are proper Old Skool trimmers and there work is excellent.

Its been run on Castrol RS(which is the non BMW version but the same) for years with no issues. It is used in M3's and its fully synthetic so if its good enough for them its good enough for a Nova :)

Its running on Vauxhall semi 10-40. like you my experience of the pressure gauge is full when cold, when hot it drops to 1/4 when idling and full again when under load, so it's had me guessing for a while. We have tried out different sets of clocks already, we have quite a few between us. Yeah for piece of mind I would like to independently check the pressure, i guess I need to find a friendly garage.
The seats were retrimmed using a doner set of seats for the bolster material by a mobile upholster, Mark has the details as he kindly organised that.. Along with most of the rest of the recent rebuild, thanks again to Mark.
It's currently got 195 45 15 falken ze702s I think on it. But I'm getting wheel rub with any weight in the back, even the spare wheel is enough, I really don't want to grind the arches, I made them wider in order to keep the lip and give more clearance but it wasn't enough, since we have wheel wobble problems I'm thinking of a different tyre, any recommendations for tyres with smaller crowns, to clear the rear arches. Could tracking be responsible for speed related steering wheel vibration? as it's not the most pleasant car to throw around at the moment.

Edd

Tracking maybe a issue, more likely to be the wheels need balancing IMO

In my experience depending on certain brands you'll always get tyre rub with 195's with a 15" rim. I prefer a 14" rim with either 185 or 175, I'm running 175's due to the offset of my wheels. I also beleive that a smallblock nova drives/handles better on 14" wheels.

PaulW
05-06-11, 12:36 PM
The wheels have been balanced and rebalanced, which is why we think the tyres have slight flat spots from sitting in one spot for a few years, I've not had this problem before, but my cars have only sat still for a year max before. Or its a tracking problem, which was done by this rally preparation place, which I'm not exactly impressed with, so I don't trust that, Mark had a quick look at the tracking, but it's still can't be ruled out.

Same with parada spec 2's.

What offset are the wheels?

Thanks Kyle, down to Marks attention to detail and perseverance after life took over and what was my pride and joy ends up sat in the corner of a driveway for years halfway through the project. Thanks again to Mark who wanted another project, and has and continues to do a wonderful job. Cheers mate.

Thats good to know about the tyre choice, the wheels are et42 from what I remember. Thanks Matt.
