you could get a mk2 gsi/sr spoiler they are just a little lip that runs accross the top of the boot. Like this :

If youre lucky, the mk2 one will sit in the same holes as the old mk1 one.
Mine didnt so I had to expand the original holes!
There are other spoilers out there but the sri one is the easiest and aint that expensive if you know where to look (?55 on average)

they dont understand when i tell em i want that for the spoiler
Mk2 spoiler does look so much better. Only trouble is the Mk2 rear washer jet is smaller and slightly in a different possition so won't fit = no washer.... At least that was on my GTE tailgate with a GSi spoiler.
Flushed the wiper anyway so no worries

your quite right, you can get the smaller jets though although like you i didnt bother......... used the hole for my spoiler mounted brakelight and indicators wires and filled it with silicone.............
