View Full Version : Corsa C alternators
Anyone know if there prone to failure?
Coming back from Northampton earlier, stopped at Corley services for some cableage, jumped back int bread van an the battery light came on? Meh, drove about 20 miles, pulled over as it still hadnt gone off, alternator belt still intact.
Got to stafford an its still on? Finally got home an its STILL freaking on.... im about to set on it with some elec testers, but replacement ones are £98+vat :(
Apparently theres some kind of pump on the diesel ones, are these prone to fail?
*BTW i would ask on the Corsa C owners club lol but er, well TBH they aint got a clue about much other then neon lights & hairgel

Yeah quite common mike, get ya wallet out! As grunt says, the isuzu lump has an oil pump on the back. Check the output fella.

they are indeed quite a common failure. in fact one came in at work today. done a few in the past few months. £98+ vat sounds quite good though, IIRC my gaffer said they're about 150quid from our suppliers! could have misheard him though.
EDIT: must read previous posts before posting, as you've already discovered its the battery lol

Its official :( alternator is completly deaded :(
Set out to Burgos today, but CBA to change the funked battery....30 miles from his house my stereo goes off & wipers start to stutter..... 15 miles out the airbag & EM light come on....10 miles out the EPS cuts out....
Got to Burgos an it dies on me :( changed battery over to a new GM one an the batt light is still on, limped it 70miles home with the batt light on :(
New alternator /belt time.
mike. my old mk3 astra td (isuzu) had that happen. a new alternator was ridiculous money. my local auto electrician man stuck a new regulator thingy in for about a quarter of the price... get the yellow pages out

Well im gonna get in contact with a guy i know from a very reputable engine reconditioners tomorrow an see if he can recon it for mates rates.
Failing they vary in price from £89 on eBay all the way upto £255+vat  on google.
Its gonna be an expensive week for me with this ontop of road tax & a new batt at £69.....
why a new battery??? you have only flattened the old one....... it might take 2-3 days to charge it up, but it will work

The old battery is date 2002. Its the orignal GM battery that came out the factory with the van lol was reading 3.2amps LOL!!
A new batt was always on the cards for it anyway, just had to replace it sooner rather then later :(

I had to get a new alternator yesterday for the missus astra mk5 1.7, it was quite a bugger to take out.

Express Autoparts (http://www.yell.com/ucs/UcsSearchAction.do?keywords=&companyName=express+autoparts&location=wrexham&ssm=0&scrambleSeed=28986494&M=0&x=0&y=0) near me recondition alternators. I paid about £40 for a reconditioned 70A astra alternator with my 40A nova one as a trade in.

:( I have a 1.9 cdti astra mk5, hopefully it holds out a lot better than the 1.7 astra did.
^yea ive heard about the Vec alternators being pants!!
Anyway, ive just managed to get my hands on a 1 year garanteed recon item for £69 including VAT + £10 P&P. £22.37+VAT for a belt an whooping £98.90+VAT for a damn tensioner!!!!!
Pished right the fcuk off I am today.
1.9 alternators arent to bad when you do 1 a week lol
Why you changing the belt/tensioner?
1.9 alternators arent to bad when you do 1 a week lol
Why you changing the belt/tensioner?
Because the belts that shiny you can see your face in it lol lol & Ive done nearly 4k miles in 2 months of ownership so though what the hell, ill change it anyway kinda thing. (the tensioner i mean)
Whats the pump for on the side of the alternator?? New one arrived today, an looking at it, it looks some form of hydraulic pump driven via the alternator?
Braking? Clutch?? WTF is it?
Its the vac pump for the brake servo as diesels dont have vacuum pressure in the inlet manifold for a take off to the servo, so the alt has a pump on the back to do the job:thumb:

Ah i see! Thank fook that still works an its just the alternator thats fooked then lol
I think theyre engineered so they dont/shouldnt die as ive had the alternator woes on my cav and never had a problem with brakings lol
Ah thats alright then.
The batt went when driving the other day, so i lost everything electrical including the EPAS, driving the A14 in pishing rain, with no lights on & minimal wiper usage as i was only 10 miles or so from Burgos, CBA to stop so changed it at his house lol
