I`ve finally got my motor up and running again after fitting a rebuilt engine, cam, head twin 40`s and exhaust. The only problem is that it just aint running to well. It starts great and idles o.k. (maybe slightly lumpy) but when under load it hesitates badly and makes a noise a bit like pinking, but not actually pinking. When it hits about 4000rpm it takes off and the noise stops and I get that lovely deep growl. I`ve adjusted the timing and mixture (CO) to factory settings and have checked for leaks around the manifold but no luck. I know I`ll need to visit a rolling road soon, but can`t afford it right now. Any Ideas anyone, please!

I forgot to mention that it appears to back fire petrol/air mixture from the 3rd carb?

The carbs sound like the carbs need setting up mate.

You need to re-jet / set your carbs. Sounds like a slow running jet fault, or your main jet`s the wrong size.

They are all brand new jets of the correct size. I`ve re-checked the cam belt alignment and it was out. It now pulls really well (better than my Cav GSi), but it is still a bit lumpy a idle. Carbs 3&4 seem to pop and 1&2 sound o.k.

Apart from what the others have said. -Our's ran like shite to start with as well - apparently they do this when first fitted sometimes. Blow back and flames was our experience as well! R you running high octane fuel? Tuned engines esp. with head jobs nearer highest octane fuel you can get else it'll pink like fuck. R the carbs new? If not could be blocked jets.Have you got a good filter on yet - that made a difference 4 us. Have you tried advancing and retarding a bit - factory settings maybe a little out for your car now it's modded.

Cheers, its good to know that somebody else has had these probs. I`ve got a couple of dirty old pipercross filters, but I`m not using them at the moment because they are so big and space is a bit tight. Sorry I haven`t got back to you (CP) yet, but I`ve been spending all available hours on the car.
Can you remind me what you have done with regards to choke, if I remember correctly you don`t use one?
Cheers
