everything bar explorer.exe lol

click on CPU and it will order the list in whats demanding the most computing power to the least, then you can see what processes are using the most

get a print screen up mate and il tell you what you can end without losing your taskbar or something, lol,

also, if you want to speed things up even more, and a more perminant(sp) measure,

download this program, it doesnt cost anything, go to startup manager, and where it applications, anything without a windows logo next to it, uncheck so it wont come on when you startup your system,.

also theres other tools in there that you can use to speed it up,

Link - Clicky... (http://www.nkprods.com/ncleaner_setup.exe)

Hope this helps dude...

i dont think it would cause you to lose everything and force a reboot, a little bit extreme matey,

using msconfig from the run menu will give you access to the start up programmes, stopping things like msn from booting on start up will aid in firing up quicker, and internet pages will load quicker, but i wouldnt be expecting a massively noticeable differant, downloading MORE programmes to increase the speed of your pc is abit of a fail on all levels,

how many spyware/malware/anti virus programmes have you got, and how many of them have processes running in the background?

the start up programm which novawhatever has got you to download will now be another drain on your resources, does it start up AT start up, because you may be best using it, then running msconfig and stopping it

Yes it would as you need certain programmes running, not just explorer.exe (which would still leave your pc running, just without a desktop actually)

click start>run then type in msconfig, click the startup tab, then click disable all and apply, this won't let you sisable any critical windows files, then if you want something to start at bootup, just do the same but enable what you want

Also go to startmenu>programs>startup and any items in there can be deleted (some installations will place startup items in the registry, or in the startup folder

haha i realise that, as it was a joke, but it wouldnt cause you to lose everything!

well after fighting with your pc trying to get everything closed as it tries to reopen critical files, inevitably you'll get a crash or bsod, I suppose killing the right svchost will stop that...as you'll no longer have the use of your mouse/keyboard till reboot

Personally if you cannot fix it then be creative. lol

after about 4 hours of my pc being on explorer takes 2.5gig of my 3 gig memory :(

do you mean internet explorer or explorer.exe? sounds like a memory leak killing the app then restarting it will be a temporary fix (although if its explorer.exe, you'll have to manually restart it through task manager or you'll have no desktop in that session)

a) Has it gotten noticeably slower? I.e. was it faster to begin with or has it just been slow from the off
b) XP or Vista? Or other...
c) Hardware specs? RAM, CPU, Hard drives (speed), motherboard etc
d) When is it slow? When running a certain application or just in general?
e) How many processes start when windoze starts?

in that case mate, try a disk clean up, and defragment your drives... should be a bit quicker,

for anti virus, try AVG, its free and about the best ive found yet...

also, there alot of spyware about at the moment, the best free program id recommend is anti malware bytes..

I bought a new machine because of this problem - vista HUGE hard drive dual core processors and so on...

Just as bad as my prev machine...

Sometimes I think it spends more time downloading "updates" than anything else!

New windows 7 is out now - wonder what thats goona be like.

So tempted to move to another OS - anyone use Linux and whats it like?

windows 7 is supposed to be the mutts nutts, one of the guys at our work uses it on his CAD pc and he thinks its the proper doggs danglies, alot of places are doing a deal now where when you buy vista, you get a free upgrade to windows 7 when the product is released, its pretty freely available on the net though i think??

Windows 7 is said to be good. Will run happily on an XP-spec hardware machine too so I hear...

Linux is good, but if you're used to windows it takes a while to get the hang of it. Also, if you're not confident on command line stuff, and programs that rarely work (and when they do, they don't do what you want them to do), don't bother with it lol

I wouldn't be keen on an upgrade version of any windows OS. IMO you're always better installing afresh.

TBH I'll be leaving it as is till windows 7 has bedded in a bit - I tiedied up my machine a bit and its much smoother (ATM).

Just need to get a faster internet connection!

Windows 7 is well worth changing over to imo, had so many odd issues with vista it's unreal and 7 seems to be a lot quicker, easier and more user friendly... best bit is the 'getting started' video where everything is compared to xp and vista is not mentioned at all lol
