Reading the article on hear says if your car is on a K plate then you need a cat, my brothers mini is on a k plate and was registered in nov 1992

I looked on my v5 and mine was registered in oct 1992
I just had a full system fitted and dont want to have to change it all back for the mot
i've looked online but it says all cars must have one, there isnt actually a proper answer i guess its just how picky the m.o.t tester is ?
going through my documents and there isnt even an emissions test paper and i have most m.o.ts + failure sheets etc

help appreciated !

Yeah, think 93 was when it became legislation, iirc before then it was optional for manufacturers to install 1

I think that euro 1 kicked in Aug/September 1992 so being regestered October 1992 I would say that it DOES need one. However put the old exhaust in the boot & put it through with out the cat, should it fail on not having one you can just swap it over (should you full system not be welded together that is) on the forecourt and retest it straight away.

Postman pats van had a cat and that was pre 93 IIRC DVLA says no vehicle details exist for 'PAT 1'. It appears the dodgy tw4t was up to more than stealing credit cards and birthday money from the post of Greenville. lol

As for the original question, '92 K shouldn't require one. If your emmisions are at an acceptable level then you can pass without one, just as you can fail with one. lol

Believe August 1992 was the cut off point for lower CO and HC emissions. It's not that they have to see that you have a CAT, it's that the emissions has to be much better than under the previous legislation.

Then again some testers will give benefit of doubt. I have had issues with old cavaliers and the absence of rear seat belts on the 1986 cars. Somebody had had a rear belt retro fitted on one side only and the tester insisted on seing the V5C to clarify the date of registration! Same sort of situation really.

August 92 was the point at which the stricter emmissions testing came into force as Guderian states - having a cat is not the requirement, it's meeting the numbers.

Until recently no Nova was listed on the Ministry systems as being of age/spec to require anything other than the basic test. The systems have been updated - the C14SE and C16SE in the SRi and GSi are now listed correctly and should be tested to the more stringent CO/HC test - normally a cat is what's needed to get the figures within the limit.

Lets simplify things. K plate onwards requires a cat to test. Unless otherwise stated in the fact it was a last run of carb models, or its a suzuki and get away with most things.

50 quid should get you a pass without one
