Jesus - anyone see 5th gear tonight when they crash tested the Volvo and BMW?

:o

For those that didnt, they set up 2 radio controlled cars (10 yrs old ones) - BMW 5 series and a Volvo (740 I think) then set them on a collision course at 60mph. they hit at the drivers front corner (to simulate and overtaking head on collision)

Absolutely unbelievable!

It destroyed the cars and put them both on their roofs!

And these (despite age) are sposed to be reinforced tanks!

There was nothing left of the drivers section of both cars and on both the steering wheel was where the B piller should be!

Fcuking scarey!

I'd hate to see what would happen if you set one of them against a nova.

Yeah, I would have like to have seen a full head on, not just a side swipe kinda thing. A nova would have made no differance, Instant Death .

I certainly hope that we've all learned a lesson.......

full head on would have been nasty but the point they were making was that a corner impact avoids all the crumple zones, and protection!

Head on - the engine absorbs some of the impact - nowt to absorb at the sides on older cars

Nova versus Volvo - nowt left of the nova - volvo ud feel a bump n keep going

Well if you didn't see it, think of it like this.

Car 60mph ---> :!: <---- Car 60 mph

Thats equal to hitting a concrete wall at 120mph :|

I saw! SCARY! Especially when u are next on a national speed limit road with 1 lane in either direction and no cnetral reservation and on a steady corner doing 70!

In a Landy you would be slightly safer.

Firstly you can only do 60mph.

Secondly you'd be thrown clear into next week.

Thirdly the other car wouldn't exsist.

Some CNUT in a new landy WAS SO CLOSE to doing that to me today! I actually turnt around at next turnin, sped after him and stopped in the middle of the road after over taking him! Thought he was gonna cry when he saw me get out and start going psycho!

Sorry guys, just some PRICK like that could kill you one day!

Thats New Landys.

Old ones are the best

it was acctually quite scary.

if they did a proper head to head then the engeisn wouldnt ahve absorbed any of the impact as they are big lumps of metal, instead they would ahve been pushed into the passenger compartment allong with the steering wheel and dashboard.

basically at low speeds and single vehicle impacts cars tend to be safe, but once you get to any kind of pace (45+) then basically its good night. A roll cage and good crumple zones will prolong the pain, but it will still hurt lol.

i want a radio controlled car like that though lol

Wisewood - play car sumo!

:D

Line both of em up nose to nose in a car park with a big circle drawn round them, then you literally see who can push the other one out using nowt but brute acceleration and clutch control!

Was on some mad car program last year - dead silly!

Whitey - know what you mean about Landy's. My m8 had a 2ltr nova used to race at Knockhill (full cage in etc etc) was going home to Largs when some woman overtook on a blind corner going uphill in a freelander. Police estaimted she was doing 80. Hit him on the drivers corner (his side of the road) and destroyed the car! Sent what was left 200 yrds back up the hill.

He survived but had to be cut out. Her car had a dented bull bar and buckled wheel! Once theyd cut him free she went snake on him and started to kick him (he was semi conscious on the floor) - saying he should have moved out the way!
:o
Prob was there was a large wall on his other side so he couldnt.

Police arrested her for GBH and she was banned!

Stupid thing was coz he had only been driving 18 months he got 6 points for not paying attention!

how u sposed to get out the way of a freelander on a blind corner when its suddenly on you!

I race RC cars as a hobby, but didnt see this prog, tho i do sumtimes watch it, its not to bad... the only thing i will say is that did they account for scale speed? If for example they did a crash at 20mph, and the car is 1/10th scale then the scale speed is 200mph. Which is rather different to normal speed. I didn't see the prog, but just a point i thought id make!!!

It wasnt actually a small remote control car mate. it was remotely controlling 2 proper cars!!
