View Full Version : Lo, I have returned

Jack
15-10-09, 01:19 PM
Yes, I can now just about sit in front of a computer again. lol

For those of you that don't know; last Friday I went to the docs with what I (and he) thought was a simple cyst or infection in my manly region. As a precaution, I was referred to the local A&E for a scan, where the ultrasound picked up a large tumor in my right testicle.

Saw the consultant Monday morning, and was taken into hospital first thing Tuesday as a priority case. Had an operation later in the morning, and I was discharged - sans one nut - Tuesday afternoon. I've not been on much as this is the first time I've been able to sit in my chair at my computer (trying to use my N85 to go on here is rubbish :p), and even now I'm kinda perched on the edge of said chair. A 4" slice in my groin isn't the most amicable of wounds to have lol

So there we go, I've gone from being a picture of health to being half the man I used to be (lol) in a matter of days. The consultants seem pretty confident it hasn't spread elsewhere, but I have a CT scan next week to check, then probably a small course of chemo after that.

Just remember boys, if you do find anything out of the ordinary, don't hesitate to get it checked out. I was "lucky" as mine was a tad sore, where as normally testicular cancer is quite painless - the fact I did go to the docs and discovered it early has hopefully saved it from spreading further.

I check my balls regular, so you had one removed? You got balls admitting that. On a serious note though glad you're ok mate!

Like I said Jack, you were brave to have gone to the docs. Most people would have tried putting it off, hoping that it'll just go away itself.

I don't know about you only being half the man you were, I doubt it'll tame your sex drive at all!

I hope all goes well with the CT etc x

Indeed, although I'm still waiting for it to sink in a bit. I'm pretty horizontal about most things, the nurses seemed a little perplexed at how well I took the news. My theory is, shi!t happens so deal with it, not really much I can do about it and I was in good hands.

Damn RJ, glad to hear you are ok. Was it actually cancerous?

I got cheked about year and a half ago as I had found a small lump at the top of one of the boys. Was wondering what to do as you would, but at the end of the day it would have been silly not to go see the doc.

Doc said there was nothing wrong. I was over Saturns moon.

He said just check on a monthly basis for anything out fo the ordinary, which is what I do now.

One of the anesthetists nurse was rather nice. The last thing I remember is her stroking my arm before I zonked out lol

Not doing the fake one, there's a risk of infection plus they'd have to slice me again to put it in.

;)

Had my scan this morning (after I had cunningly disguised the gakk in strong ribena to hide the taste, the b'stards made me drink more of the gakk in water when I rocked up as they'd "run out" of blackcurrant juice) which was actually quite fun really, aside from having MORE hairs torn out my arm due to plasters from needles etc. Being injected with iodine or whatever the feck it is was ACE :d

Anywoo. It could be up to ten days before I get the results from the scan, but I'm hoping they come in next week as I have an appointment at the BRI next Friday at which I was hoping they'd tell me what the next course of action is. Which of course depends on the outcome of this scan I suppose.

So I've been to Bristol today for my "Cancer Clinic" lol

Results of the CT scan are in. My chest and abdomen are clear, but the lymph nodes in the lower abdomen are showing up tumors. My blood has also tested positive to carrying cancer markers.

Sooo... I'm currently sorting myself out to prepare for chemo on the 10th November. I've just had flu and pneumonia jabs, waiting on swine flu; booked a checkup with the dentist next week. I also should be going back to Bristol mon/tues next week to leave a sample in case things go tits up with the cancer and the little future RJ's get nuked.

They seem "confident" that the chemo should sort out the remaining cancer cells; but you have to see with my slight apathy over that considering they were "confident" it wasn't cancer, then they were "confident" it hadn't spread. If the chemo doesn't work, its back under the knife for further surgery in an effort to chop the cancer out. But I'm hoping it doesn't get to that point.

I'll be in hospital on the 10th to start the BEP chemo, they'll keep me in for 3-4 days during which time they said I'll either a) feel like sh!t, b) be violently sick, c) be incredibly bored, or d) all of the above. Thankfully I can have the intermediate treatment at Yeovil hospital, so I only have to schlepp to Bristol once every 3 weeks.

Now I'm off to shave my head before it all falls out. :thumb:

Nova_Tek

You can screen yourself fairly easily mate after you've had a shower. Search google and it'll give you info on how. If you suspect something then you can then visit your doc.

Should be done at least once a month so you can spot for any changes.

AFAIK chemo is types of drugs that help kill cancer cells, they interefere with the cancer cells reproduction, or something along the lines.

Jack
11-11-09, 02:47 PM
the drugs are delivered by a via into a cannula in my hand. They kill any rapidly reproducing cells, hence tackling the cancer cells, but that means it also destroys my immune system and makes my hair fall out. Lol

how does it work if you dont mind me asking? chemo i mean! It destroys any fastly dividing cells(i.e. cancer cells), but also destroys other fastly dividing cells (hair for example)

I'm back home :) they were impressed with how my body handled the chemo so they kicked me out a day early (either that or they wanted the bed, more likely lol). I'm a bit tired due to the lack of sleep last night, a little sore from indigestion due to the anti sickness tabs and the bleomycin nuking my lungs, but aside from that Ok at the moment. I'm still hoping to be well enough to make an appearance at the karting but we'll see, as that will be just after I come out of hospital from round 2.

Those of you following my diary on facebook, I'm just about upload the entries that cover my time in hospital.

my workmates missus went thru it last year with breast cancer, the actual injections varied between no pain & absolute agony, i think it depended on the speed that it was pushed in. as far as I know, none of us have gone thru what you are going through and the thought of it fills me with dread, but i reckon you are mentally strong enough, so just keep asking for bed baths, and put your thermometer in your tea, that should keep them busy for a bit........

I have officially finished round 1, and I'm still alive and only had one day of proper sickness. My hair has fallen out, so I've buzzed it to a grade 1. My beard has mostly fallen out, annoyingly only the grey and blonde hairs remain in my 'tache so although I do still have some semblance of a beard, you can't actually see it very well.

I'm back to Bristol on Tuesday for three days again to start round 2.

[edit] My sister finds it amusing that I have cancer, no immune system, yet I'm not bothered about any of that an only worried about people seeing my beard. lol

Dude i feel for you, im not to sure what to say, but just hope everything stays good, did they say how the tumor looked after did a biopsy on it?

Is the chemo as precautionary, or needed as it's worse then first thought?

Scott

Jack
28-11-09, 06:17 PM
My blood had cancer markers in it so I was expecting at least one round of chemo, but as they found it had spread they decided I needed 3 rounds and possibly more surgery. D'oh.

One of the consultants did ring me when he got the results of the biopsy, seem to remember it was a malignant tumour.

As said, go to the doctors NOW and ask, in fact demand, to have an ultrasound.

Pain/discomfort usually means its a cyst or infection - quite common and easily treatable with a course of antibiotics. However, many doctors will sit on top of something like this and say "we'll keep an eye on it", which is the wrong thing to do as testicular cancer can be agressive.

I was lucky (of sorts) in that I caught it fairly early, however it still spread and now I have to undergo somewhat complex surgery in the next month or so.

Get it checked, have the ultrasound scan even if its just for peace of mind. Don't take no for an answer! If your doctor passes you off, ask to see another doctor for a second opinion.

Thats been in my fridge since October last year. lol

Had a call earlier from one of the people in Bristol. The results from my last CT scan (the first scan after my RPLND op, thats the one that sliced me open) are good so I'ver been given the all clear.

I have an appointment in Bristol on Friday so I'll find out then the detail, but as far as they're concerned I'm fixed.

ive just spotted this and i have a lot of respect for you dude!!!!

i found a lump a year or so ago in my armpit and i just ignored it well until the missus got wind of it and marched me down the docs!!
the doctor told me it could be a sist but gave me some pills and some cream to use.

this lasted a couple of weeks and it went before i finished the course, so i stopped takin the meds.

much to my suprise i went to sleep one nite and all was well but when i woke up in the mornin it was like a golf ball and ached like ****!!!

i went straight to the docs but a drop in centre as i couldnt get an appointment for a couple of days (typical at my docs) the doc said there was nowt to worry bout as it was just an enlarged boil just cause by sweat mainly. phew i was panicking to the point where i was sweating buckets in the waiting room. all is ok now they gave me a cream to use and use till the end!!!

i thought i would write my experience because there was guy on this thread who said he found a lump on his armpit he needs to get it checked

anyway nuff bout me good luck for the future jack i admire ya muchly dude ;)

Did I tell you the dit about the guy who had a button on there to make him wee? lol

I did read a book written by some bloke about his woes with testicular cancer, I think it was called One Lump Or Two or something like that. Interesting read, but tbh it actually opened my eyes a bit as to how other people see it. I won't bore people here with the detail, but what that author went through and what I went through were totally different, and he handled it completely differently too.

Glad you're on the mend bitch. A girl I used to run about with got Cancer of the throat, and a particularly agressive case of it as well.

It just goes to show that at our age, its a difficult subject to deal with but thankfully, with out health and age, we're able to overcome it pretty well.

TBH, I found a lump in my nether regions once, I was so frightened I told no one and never went to the doctor's about it as I was frightened of the result. It did disappear after a month or so but Its a scary time and you dont really know where to go or what to do.

Remember kids, your health is your wealth.
