Looks really well fella!

Whats the crack with the rear disk conversion?

You say it just bolts on?

It looks alot better then the mk4 astra stuff most use!

Southie
19-01-10, 09:23 AM
Looks well indeed, some nice trick bits aswell. Aren't the Protec rear disc conversions kits a MK4 Golf setup not cheap iirc, I could be wrong though lol

A mate of mine (16xe_Chris) is doing the Blackpool rally on the 5/6 of Feb for his first multi venue in his 16 16v Nova so we will see you there, I'll be in the the chase car though lol

Cheers chaps

The scruitineering and noise testing is at the Norbeck Hotel this year mate

As for the rear disc conversion it's by Protec http://www.pro-tecmotorsport.com/partsDetails.cfm?id=310 for £400 it's the full kit and just bolts on with a bit of jiggery pokery but they will just sell you the brackets if you wanted to source your own calipers and discs etc which is definately the cheaper option were just lazy ****, hand brake cables from a golf are also required and need swaging to the existing ones, swaging is a posh term for a choccey block as far as I know but a mate is doing for us so will see.

Would be nice to meet a few of the PNG crew so if your about say hello

Wait a second! I thought I reconised that car. I work for Vincents, there's a picture of this car on the wall of the parts managers office. Are you still sponsered by us? David Mitchell ring a bell?

Some nice parts going on here too.

>Southie. They do look very similer to the ones on my Leon Cupra, which are the same as a Golf 4, which are a development (but only slightly. i.e they dont stick) of the Golf 2 ones ;)

Slippy
20-01-10, 08:16 AM
The car came from down your next of the woods mate but it now resides oop north with me ;)

Slippy
27-01-10, 07:10 PM
Small update, shafts are sourced we just need to find the money for them

Sparky2i has just ordered some Works Uni Balls to replace the standard bottom ball joints which is a recognised weakness

http://www.pro-tecmotorsport.com/partsDetails.cfm?id=84

With little mechanical work to do we have been tidying the car up a little bit by de stickering it, repairing and paiting the bonnet, grill and bumper from the Xmas Stages hay bail incident so once we get back on it's Compomotives as appose to the nasty three spokes it sits on she should look quite tidy

Aye mate we did the Xmas Stages

db_1.2
27-01-10, 08:10 PM
Certainly is a smart bit of kit, do you run EPAS? Or none at all?

Slippy
27-01-10, 08:23 PM
No mate never felt the need tbh, I used to run 205 Challenge car and that was ridicolous in the slower corners but the Nova in comparison is light as a feather

In fact I think I am falling for it a bit, dead easy to work on and with the mods were doing it should be really strong

db_1.2
27-01-10, 08:28 PM
Thats really suprising! Everyone goes on about the 205 performance, but to be honest, ive always thought the torsion rear beam let it down. And as you said, novas are so easy to work on

I find you get a much better feel with no power steering, but ive never really had the opportunity to drive a rally car of any specification. I certainly like the look of yours!

any chance of a picture of you hydrolic hand brake position.

i am going to be doing a internal shifter and need to re-locate my hydrolic hand brake which like yours is set vertically.

Car looks good and should be a good little runner for you. watched one at the prom stages running 1600 16v on tb's and ran well.

Slippy
01-02-10, 08:18 PM
205's back end lets them down, that said I only ever pedalled ours on gravel so cant really comment

Grooge what type of pics you after ride height ???

Yep all set really just a few last minutes bits to do, my mate up at Playskool is going to track it ans et the camber thursday then it's just a case of packing the spares etc and were off, cant fooking wait

Only pic I have for now of the handbrake I think but I can take a few more detailed ones if you want, would recommend the smaller 0.65 bore cylinder as it takes less movement to lock the rears, the rally design is very simiar to ours

errr... thats a mk1/GTE bumper mate, where as the grill is a mk2 item. They will go together in a fashion, but not quite right. The bumper that came off the car is a GSi item ;)

Slippy
04-02-10, 01:06 AM
Your dead right mate we've had to do a it of jiggery pokery to make them 'gel', still newish to Novas so didnt realise till we had them all sprayed up but end of the day it's a rally car and were out at the weekend and thats all that counts, we will eventually fully strip the car and go fibre glass panels etc

Cheers chaps and nice to meet you Steve apologies if I wasn't particulary with it we'd had a few mares including getting to Blackpool and my co driver realising he'd left his licence back in Teesside :tard:

Very very testing event and had it not been for ten minutes in penalties we would have finished 37th ish but unfortunately we got done for checking in to time control to early

Little update nothing to exciting but whilst the engine and box was out we decided to rub down/repaint the engine bay and attack any rust we found, I'm very pleased to report that amazingly bar the odd spot the main areas that would normal cause concern like the battery tray and chassis legs are absolutely perfect underneath all the paint and road film.

Wish we'd never started now though as there seems like there is a million and one nooks and crannies to sand and repaint but hopefully it will be worth it

Battery Tray

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o60/captainfunbags/NOVA/28022010002.jpg

Legs

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o60/captainfunbags/NOVA/28022010003.jpg

And the reason the engine and box are out in the first place the Quaiffe box

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o60/captainfunbags/NOVA/28022010007.jpg

We now have the funds for the Grp A shafts which we'll be collecting this week and have sourced to hubs to suit so all being well we should have it back together soon just hope we can remember where everything we stripped out goes lol

We have rubbed down and repainted the tie bars/anti roll bar and bottom ars etc so I will post some pics of them shortly

Thanks mate

We finally got a coat of primer on the engine bay after what seems like a life time of sanding grinding all the knooks and crannies so it's starting to look tidy unfortunately it was a bit dark come knocking off time for a picture but I'll get one on soon.

Today we have seperated the standard F13 box from the engine and taken the clutch and fly wheel off ready for the AP paddle clutch, lightened/balanced steel fly wheel and Quaiffe box to go on

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o60/captainfunbags/NOVA/07032010005.jpg

We, or rather Sparky2i's dad Spikey Mikey, finished painting cleaning up and painting the anti roll bar, bottom arms and tie bars ready to go back on.

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o60/captainfunbags/NOVA/07032010001.jpg

We've sourced the Grp A hubs to take the Hockley shafts and built them up with the Alcon calipers on ready to refit, will post a pic one they are cleaned up (Tart I know) but the look the nuts with the 285mm discs on bells

Oh and took delivery of some DTM style mirrors from a nice chap in the hope they will survive more than an event as they dont stick out as far as standard ones so less prone to be left in hay bales, we'll probably paint them but haven't decided yet

Also does the caliper bracket held in place by the stub axle bolts? or do you weld it on?

I've still got the Motors TV footage on Sky+ and watch it from time to time.

I too am in the middle of some mods. I used to use a F13 CR cluster with 4.53 FD with a ZF 40% diff, but i've been struggling with gears as in I never use 5th, even on Otterburn so I've Just bought a Quaife SCCR with 4.86FD, i'll keep my diff. I'm also fitting a new drivers door as I had a coming together with the scenary at Hillhouse.

We are doing the North of England Tarmac Championship so our next outing is at Ingliston, Edinburgh on the 24th April.

Hope to run into you somewhere. (Not litterally of course)

Slippy
26-03-10, 10:42 AM
Hope so mate we normally do most of the Northern ones just not doing the championship this year

We've took a massive leap from the boggo standard F13 and 8v which we were running on the NW to Quaiffe cluster, 4:53 FD ZF 90% (Might have to get myself to the gym) and a Bill Falconer Clubman engine all tied together with Grpa Shafts and Hubs

Just cant wait to get it back together to see what difference there will be, a massive one I suspectlol

There are a few in the Borders region both tarmac and gravel, Otterburn Camp is a cracking venue and has 2 or 3 events a year

kevs old brakes i assume? and also, how do the lock stops fit? do they just insert into the casing ends to block the arms?

Slippy
30-03-10, 05:13 PM
Correct, he ended up costing himself a small fortune for brakes, and new wheels because he wanted his AP bias bottles to match the calipers, proper tart lol

Aye I think the stops just insert between the casing and the arms to prevent them going right to the end of their 'threads' if that makes sense

Didn't get a great deal done today though we did rebuild the rack, gave a blast with the wire brush, regreased everything, inserted the lock stops replaced the track rod ends, boots and also replaced one of the steering arms as it was bent

**** quality pic for some reason but you get the idea of what we started with

Quick pic of the lock stop in postion, the lock stop is basically a spacer in effect and needs tapping down inside the body of the rack, we think thats right anyway lol

Quick update,
We have finally sorted the remote adjuster for the bias pedal box which I'll post some pics of tomorrow once it's re-fitted and painted (of course) hence Sparky2i making like a contortionist to run the cable through the bulk head whilst I stood by and sipped my tea lol

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o60/captainfunbags/NOVA/Image022.jpg

We've also been rebuilding the rear arches after we cut some of the crusty edges out again pics tomorrow once it's had chance to go off but it's looking pretty good

I've spent most of the day grinder in hand lashing all the paint and underseal off the inner front arches, pleased to report that all appears solid and as it should be so just a case of painting and starting the other side, joy :tard:

I have to apologise for the boring updates but the current graft is the hard miles so to speak, once it's done we can start bolting the shiney bits on and painting panels etc

Quick couple of pics of the drivers rear arch which Sparky2i has rebuilt, we cut the crust out treated the cavity with Kurust and then built it up using mesh reinforcement and fibre glass just needs some filler and a rub down and it will be ready for paint

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o60/captainfunbags/NOVA/IMG00021-20100321-1551.jpg

Rear inner arches will be getting the same treatment as the fronts shortly, joy cant wait lol

Quick update

We collected the Grp A shafts yesterday and they feel high quality items though they should be for the money

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o60/captainfunbags/NOVA/Image041.jpg

And I've added above another exciting pic of stage 3 of the arch rebuild :smt001

Iain
18-04-10, 06:25 PM
Nice work, why not replace the arch with metal instead of fibreglass?

Always wondered too, what is a grp A shaft exactly?

Slippy
18-04-10, 06:45 PM
Fibreglass just because it's easier for us to do rather than getting somebody to weld it for us etc

Grp A shafts are basically uprated versions of standard, the actual 'shaft' material is of much higher quality to deal with the additional abuse and power put through them as are the CV's/Knuckles etc, overkill on a road car really but well worth it on a competition car

Iain
18-04-10, 06:52 PM
So the shafts use the standard hubs etc?

Slippy
01-05-10, 07:34 PM
Sorry mate missed your reply, There are a few ways of doing it

You can use standard hubs and have them machined to accept the larger 'Astra' bearing but this removes material from the outer and makes them potentially weak and you can use an Audi/VW bearing which I forget the exact model it's off but that has the correct inner size and does not require as much if any machining which maintains the integrity of the hub

Something like that anyway, Or you can not be a pikey and buy the pukker Grp A jobs

Anyway slow progress as ever but at least we have finished the inner arches today, back to bare metal primed then painted and looking quite good actually so happy days, we'll have the engine bay done and dusted tomorrow

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o60/captainfunbags/NOVA/IMG00018-20100501-1650.jpg

Iain
01-05-10, 07:37 PM
Arch looks good! What paint did you use?

Slippy
02-05-10, 08:00 PM
Just some boggo primer then white stone chip which has cured to a creamy colour ??? bizarre but one run and it's filthy anyway so not to fussed it's more for piece of mind that the car is solid really

Slippy
09-05-10, 06:24 AM
Finally started to bolt some shiney bits back on to the car yesterday

Rebuilt rack and freshly painted pedal box back on the car complete with remote adjuster for the brake bias

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o60/captainfunbags/NOVA/IMG00029-20100508-1740.jpg

Hi Slippy which side have you got the front and rear brakes plumbed on the bias box also what master cylinders are you using with the Alcons and lastly for now I think how long was the adjuster cable as I'm in the process of sorting the same brakes hence question 'counter bore or not' on Britishrally forum

Cheers
Danny

Slippy
31-05-10, 07:39 PM
Hi Danny

Which side you plumb doesn't really matter I dont think but the size of the cylinders does, Think the rear is .0750 for the rear and .0625 for the fronts

Adjuster cable is that long on the Protec kit but is long enough to be routed from the right hand side of the steering wheel (Near the lights swtch IIRC) through the bulk head and into the side of the peddle box

Protec sell th kits and Allan is a top guy who knows his stuff

Haven't updated the thread for a while but we were out at the weekend enjoying the fruits of our labour and have to say we are very happy with the car performance it absolutey flies and it handles and brakes brilliantly., barring a mecanical faux pas on our part i.e throttle linkage we fabricated letting us down we would have probably come home with a pot

LMF sell nylon bushes to replace the middle pivot ones on the linkage if that helps?

I need to order a piece of nylon bar from plastics direct but probably wouldn't be able to make them as soon as you wanted them. I am planning on making about 10 sets up though if demand is there same with the linkage i made.

Slippy

VX still supply them in case anybody else is after a set, £13 for a couple of wafer thing plastic cups was a bit a kick in the stones but lets see how long they last, think we might get hold of another linkage and rose joint the fecker.

Out next weekend on the John overend at Melbourne in York and there is a few Nova's entered so should be interesting :)
