coolant temp guage not working

hi, the coolant temp guage in my 1.0l nova doesnt work. when the ignition is off the arrow is at half way and when u turn on the ignition the arrow flys up past the red. is the guage itself broken? or is it the water water sensor?

disconnect the sensor and see what the guage does

sounds like a broken wire, remove the clocks, and disconnect at the sender, and check for continuity through the wire.
