View Full Version : XE on SBD TB's, Misfiring

Right then, went out in the car the other day and it's misfiring, it gets to about 3.500rpm in 3rd, 4000rpm in 4th, 5.500rpm in 5th and then splutters/hesitates slightly, like there is a problem with a sensor, would it possibly be a sensor is loose, so it's vibrating and reading the vibration and then making this transfer into a twitch in the timing/coil spark etc etc?

If so what sensor would likely be, and location etc.

Is it still apparent when warmed up thoroughly?

Have you checked its getting good spark and fuel?

scott.parker

Plugs are good, clean, all leads are AOK, Injectors are all OK etc.

As for temperature, it dose it when warm/cold, did it at combe first, reason i think it's sensor is my mate had similar thing on his turbo'd 1600 8v, as the engine was rocking too much etc.

but it's not that as mines on solids, so though maybe some sensor has rattled loose?

Have you tried a different crank sensor?

No Rick i have not, without sounding dumb, i simply don't know where they are, as i have looked in the Haynes, and cant find them.

Its bolted in the front of the block by the drivers side mount.

It will be just under the drivers side front engine mount. Check the wiring is not broken etc. Worth trying a different one if you can get hold of one for a quick test. Not sure if mbe (is that what management you are on?) is as picky as some (some dont like plastic crank sensors and only the early metal bosch ones).

Yeah it's on MBE, i'll check the sensor then, and see if i can buy another for a qucik test.
Cheers.

I'd say it sounds like a dead coilpack as its doing it at different speeds/loads. if it was the crank sensor I'd have thought it would be cak at a given rpm regardless of the gear etc

I'm with the big gay bear above, sounds like coilpack to me too, Scott - search for a thread from dhdev (Oli) roughly 8 months ago, almost sounds identical :)

me too - another thing you can check - if its sensor related - drive it with a laptop plugged in with the main screen showing - if any sensore is going mad etc, it will show up...

Are you running a Ford/'SBD' coil pack or GM?

Will, PASS!? It came with the TB set up from Dave Marshall 2nd hand, guessing "SBD" item though as im sure he bought it as a kit.

Right best order a coil pack then, oh joy, more money! lol
Think I'll get the car fully mapped setup etc, keep it for a year, use it as much as i can then sell it, just not got time/money nor enthusiasm for it now, would rather restore the mk1 TBH.

Scott you can pick up the ford coil packs in any breakers, i would try and find one to borrow or cheap second hand one to test it and rule it out.

Ben, any gen on the Ford coil pack? as my dad has a 98R mondeo 2ltr zetec, would it be same as on that? if so could just nick it quickly to try it??

Ben

tbh scott i really cant remember which zetec model it is they use, whip yours off and offer it upto your old mans, it will have a part number on it.

I do know that the Fords use the same coil packs from Ka's to Focus's with escorts inbetween so chances are its likely to be the right one.

was just about to post coil pack or leads, had a similar problem a couple of months ago, cheap coil pack from ebay but changed the plugs & leads in the mean time and cured it! was about to offer you a surplus to requirments coil pack there but glad you got it fix. there are 2 styles of gm coilpack iirc.

PS, cracking 1/4 time! is that in typical road trim? ie fancy tyres etc?

I think im going to buy new plug's and some new more recommended premium grade performance leads, the 1/4 time is on cheap ass tyres, look in my WIP for how the car stands right now mate.

Dunno if that's the ones I have, would need to check the box in the garage, sure they were a fair bit less than 30 so doubt it! Orange and yellow box iirc!
