I bought a new steering wheel.

#So I started taking my old one off!!!!!!!!!

* I Disconected the horn,
* I Undid the retaining bolt,
* And I have pulled and pulled at this steering wheel but it wont move.
* I oiled it thinking after 11 years it might of got stuck on. <No budge>
I shocked it with a hammer but <no budge>
IT WILL NOT MOVE NOT EVAN A LITTLE LITTLE BIT.

I have got so annoyed I have tried and other people have tried.
Is it just mine?
Do I need the special small 2 legged puller? (I was told to just pull it off)
Please Help me

I went round my local tool hire shop (rapid hire) and just asked them what i could take it of with, they did it there on the spot and ended up taking it off for me, for free! :D
then i just bolted my new one on! sorted!

try four or five of you all grabbing it and givin it a good spanking

worked for me

failing that goto vuaxhall with your new wheel handy, slip the indian a fiver - yes he will accept it as he is poor - spotty teenage mechanics ALWAYS DO and itll be done there and then on the spot

Yep do the above and it will pop off first time! You wont get it off by hand i doubt! And if you do try again then put the nut back on a little!!!

Take the boss and new wheel with you and slip it on in the vaux car park!! I did that! Just make sure you put boss on straight otherwise you will look like cock when u need him to remove that too!

1 - dont take the nut all the way off - its spring loaded and will fly off and has been known to knock out teeth!

2 - you need to wiggle it. left and right pulling and puching on opposite sides. It wont budge for ages and then will just pop off shooting towards you (hence bolt).

3 - if you have a long metal bar (master wheel wrench for example) slip it between the centre and upper part of wheel and force it - then reverse.

4 - try putting your knees behind wheel

5 - knocking it from underneath, on top and on the side with hammer (dont smack it though) may work

6 - tap centre section

7 - take to garage

Hardest bit I found was lining up the wheel afterwards! Mines on with the centre line going a little to the left.

Too lazy to sort ity

good way of getting the wheel straight is to take your keys out, and engage the steering lock

I used a crazed biker mechanic friend of mine.

It took him under 5 minutes. I then endured being taken around the car park with him, he throught it was so funny just pulling the wheel off and handing it to me.

Stupid guy didn't put it back on straight either!

I have got a Haynes manual! But it just says use a small two legged puller!!!!!!!!!

If I pull it too hard it wont damage the steering rack will it?

Does any one no where to get/buy a small two legged puller. My local Vauxhall garage said they didnot have one or get one.

If anyone has one they can lend me I will give you sum money for it.

I don't think my one will just pull off, I have used wd40, pulled (wid the nut on :| ) wiggled it and shoked it.

I think I will need a Puller.

The Haynes manual makes it sound so easy......
Cheers Everyone.. :)

Mike - I tried the engage steering lock method but found that my lock engages lock but I still get play in the wheel (can wiggle it left n right)

But it just says use a small two legged puller

That'll be the local midget!

Honest m8 - just get a tyre iron or similar and wrench. You could also try tying a length of rope to the top and (with nut in place) draw rope out of the hatch atr the back and yank and pull as hard as you can till you hear a clunk

Try getting out the car and yanking it from the side

You need to get aggro with it man - use the knees behind it method

much???

there will be a tiny bit of play but anything more you NEED to get that looked at cos if its broke and the pin from the lock has broke and is in the steerin column it can cause probs

hmmm. I'll check it out.

Its about 1" wobble I think (as in you can turn the wheel about 1" round).

do you need to take off the wheel to do a mk1 to mk2 dash conversion?

Alex
13-03-03, 05:13 PM
well it would be much much easier if you do

fcuk. want to do this badly but dont think i can handle the fuss of takin the wheel off!

mate

BOTH of my cars the wheel has just POPPED off, no effort at all.

one a H plate, the other a J plate

my friends GTE was a PIG that was an F plate, and when he sold up and then went back to a nova, his H plate SR was a pig also

so thats a 50/50 chance based on two dodgy ones and two pi$$ easy ones

ive been lucky   8)

sure do

you wont get the dash over the steering column otherwise.
