Hi ive just fitted a e16 se engine to my car which originaly was 1.2 spi,
Ive connected the 4 wires required from the eninge loom. When i turn the ignition on i can hear the fuel pump prime. The prob is it isnt producing a spark. Ive checked the dizzy cap rotor arm and leads. They are not in the best condition but would think they'd give a small spark but nothing. Just run out of things to check.
Has anyone got any ideas????
Thanks

Sounds like youve got a prime suspect already, change your ignition leads and throw a rotor arm in for good measure too, if not then recheck your coil wiring and earths!

sorry should have said i have put a new rotor arm on. i checked i was getting power to the coil with a volt meter. So i think it is the ht leads maybe dizzy cap. But just wanted to see if it could be something im over looking.

Have you earthed the engine loom via the rocker cover.

just done a search and read something about the coil. Are they the same for the e16se and the original 1.2 spi?

the 1.2 coil will not do , give me 2 mins and il digg out a pic of the coil you need .

iirc , the 3rd coil in that pic is the 1.2 spi coil , you will need the one that i have my finger on for the E16SE , there should be a plug on the engine loom to go coil il get more pics if you need mate .

have you ran earth from the battery all over the engine to make sure it isnt an earth ?
Also change your ignition wires round ( what spudly said )
If not change the coil over
Trial and error mate

you should have a plug like the one on the right , it plugs into the coil hope this helps

ah got excited and didnt read this post!! so im confused now lol

E16SE is similar coil to 1.2 but different code stamped/sticky labelled onto it, it's actually XE for either for the 1.2 or the E16 (can't remember which) strangely.

ok so today i cleaned all the connectors on the HT leads. I have got power going to the coil and down the main HT lead to the dizzy cap. But when i turn it over i am not getting anything to the other side of the cap. It is a new dizzy cap and rotor arm! Cant see why it is not bridging the gap on the dizzy! Any idears?

Cheers dave

does the rotor arm spin when you turn it over as i had the same problem with my e16se and it was a plastic clip on the dizzy that located it to the cam had broke if its this they are 3pound from vauxhall

novanova636

yeah all earth ok. even ran an extra one from the battery to the earth point next to the fuel rail. And the rotor arm spins all fine!

i reckon theres a good chance it will be the little sprung loaded carbon connector that sits in the middle of the cap! they crumble away. pop a cap on it.

yeah got a new dizzy cap mate. i was thinking that the arm might not be touching that little bit. Is there a couple of different rotor arms that fit? I had to change the whole bit that bolts to the engine for the dizzy cap as it had the wrong plug on it for the engine loom. So i had to just match up the arm as best as possible down halfords!!

I have the orange one. Basicsly the same as the old one apart from the brass bits in the end of the cap that the ht leads fit to. The old one had like nipple but the new one is a female fit! Think I'm just going to get a whole dizzy set off some one off here!

I was going to say about the carbon brusher inside the distributor cap like somebody has mentioned, try taking it and the little spring out and put them back in because these can become stuck too far in and won't contact.

Can't see how wiring the rev counter in will make a change

just wired it in and it sounded like it wanted to start for a second and back fired. cant check for a spark as im in on my own lol!! can someone confirm what part of the dizzy cap is for HT lead 1 please.

Depends which you're calling number 1 lol Can't remember the firing order off hand but it starts at 1 in the "2 o clock" post as you look at the dizzy from the passenger side. 1 being cam belt end iirc, fairly sure.

so looking from the front of the car its the post at the top and front of the dizzy?
