Will it protect stuff better if I prim say the beam and things with it?
To stop it coming out all patchy etc?

Will probably do the trick.
Just make sure you 'wire-wheel' it back to bright metal before covering the area. I'm a fan of having a protective coating over any repairs such as this, like a thin smear of seam sealer or some underseal. It gives better protection than a couple microns of paint which will easily get scuffed off by a sliding battery.

i have never used that stuf but i tend to use this:

ive found it does the job and soaks right into the metal (and your hands) it looks like milk when you out it on then it turns black. you can then paint on top as normal. i usualy buff off the rust as much as i can the put this on to keep it at bay. i have found the welder doesnt like it much though and makes the the weld bubble out a bit. nothing to really worry about tho.

the thing to watch with the likes of seam sealer is that you dont just seal the moisture in, allowing it to rust underneath. also watch you are not sealing over drainage holes.
your shells ****ed anyways, Let it rust lol...
