Hi. All of a sudden my engine has started ticking over at around 3000 rpm. This happens as soon as you start the engine and no matter what you do the revs don't drop. I was thinking it might be sucking air after the throttle body but have checked the engine for any disconnected pipes and can't see any problems. Anyone got any ideas? Thanks.

Id immediately suspect an air leak, but you have checked that.

Maybe check and double check to be sure.

unplug the AFM and see if it makes a difference.

Also try giving the icv a clean. Possibly a split air pipe though.

not sure if it will be the icv as its only operational below 2000rpm

Get some brake cleaner and give it a spray around the inlet. 3k sounds like quite a bad air leak (if it is that) so should change the revs when the brake cleaner is sucked in

how does it drive?

I tried unplugging the AFM and the revs drop down, so I'm now on the look out for another AFM and see if that fixes it. Thanks all for your help so far.

Tried another afm and still have the same fault. Funny thing is though I took the car for a drive and it started ticking over okay, so I put my foot down a bit and it started ticking over at 3000 rpm again, thats happened twice now once with each afm. With that in mind can't really see how it would be an air leak. Any ideas?

Gave the icv value a good clean but still have the problem. Going to try another icv and also a ecu. Any other ideas?

Take the top hat off and make sure the throttles not getting stuck open

Tried another ecu. Still the same problem. Running out of ideas now.

Tried another icv. It has helped but the car is still reving to high about 1500 rpm and the revs are slow dropping between gear changes. At one point it did get stuck and just kept reving past 5000 rpm had to turn it of at the key.

May sound silly but is your throttle sticking open? Try some wd40 on the throttle cable.

Did you check all your air and breather pipes for splits and leaks?

Also have you had your timing checked out?

I realise this is an old thread but the same issue has re-occured. Checked throttle cable, air and breather pipes, timing and changed ignition coil and distributor cap, anyone had a tps cause this kind of issue?
