View Full Version : My wheels don't automatically straighten up when i let go of the steering wheel

as above. why could this be? when i let go of the steering wheel, you cant feel it turning back to the center. sometimes it does, but very very slowly.

As said, geometry will more than likely be out too.

not hit any potholes. and no tracking hasnt been done since the springs were fitted.

I think it is toe isn't it that brings wheels straight again, basically the wheels toe in slightly like this /-\

Probably the most amusing thing I found with Novas is the way you can exit a bend & let go of the wheel & see it whip around to straight of its own accord, with std springs you get the hideous body wobble too. LOL

rough rule of thumb
toe out at the front = good turn in (and out ie letting go of the wheel and it comes back) but scrubs the tyres a lot on the straights

toe in at the front = stable straights, but lazy turn in and turn out

will the wheels recentre if its toeing in too much then?

or maybe, if one wheels i toeing out, and the other in? or something like that, uneven wheel alignment?

uneven toe will cause that and it will also be a bit snatchy (my car was when I changed both track rod ends and didnt get them back on right lol).

too much toe in would slow the wheel down a touch though.
opt for std nova settings imho

torque steer in a 1.2 :cool: and cheers stuart. looks like ill be getting my tracking done then. I did replace both track rod ends and didnt re track it after. But i put the new ones on in the exact same place as the old ones, you know where you count the number of turns? should it have been retracked properly then?

yep, as i wont be in exactly the same place no matter how well you counted.

since you lowered it the original tracking will be out anyway but your camber will be out even with the tracking done.

well when you come out of a corner, usually you can let go of the steering wheels and the the wheels re-centre themselves to save you feeding the steering wheel back to the centre. its quicker, but reduced the driver control. but dont tell me that NOBODY DOES IT HERE?!

what so also, what you're saying is, you dont do this, and you drive the way they teach you on lesons? to feed the steering wheel slowly back and not let go of it? get real

if you want to get round even quicker use the handbrake and a bit opposite lock.

aha this happened to my dads corsa, he took it to a garage and they sorted it with the laser tracking device things :P

ive found that doesnt go down too well when you're a learner... lol

If you've just lowered it, you should have ecxess toe out but ive never had that cause a complete lack of centering, but if its not returning to centre at ALL thats normally a castor issue, but the only way you'll have a castor issue on standard suspension is if something is terribly bent under there lol

Depends how you define "centre" on mine the "centre" is enough go round a light bend either way without touching the wheel, just set it up on the bend and let go lol

it can also be caused by stiff lower ball joints or a fecked top mount as they wont turn freely

Which is what i was going to say stu, as hes always had a knocking/bang which is belived to be the topmounts.

got the tracking sorted today, sorted the problem 100% - and the knocking has stopped :D
