View Full Version : I spent £400 fixing my car is this right?

carrie_girl_wonder

Yes, as you can see I spent £400 on what was meant to be a simple service! However, the rear wheel cylinders had to be changed, N.S.F flexi hose had to be changed, sump washer changed,n.s.f C.V boot changed and rear tyre as well. So i guess parts, labour, vat and full service is £400. my dad insists that this is a good deal but i'm not too sure???

ALSO,they reckon my carberetor is on it's way out which will be expensive, could i just get one from a scrappy and get a mate to fix it,I have no idea how all this works?

AND it has 2 oil leaks, which I told them it had when I got the car but they said they could not find anything, and now this is apprently going to be costly to!!!!!

I knew it sailing through the MOT was too much to ask for!

tyre+fit=£30
cv boot and flexi+fit=£50-£75
rear wheel cyl+fit=£50-£75
service=£50-£75

Ide say nearer £200 for the job.
£400 way too much :-(

If it failed on those things on the MOT then I guess they had to be fixed! And if you've already paid the £400, I'd stop worrying about if it was too much or not cos there's nothing you can do about it now. lol

Counting your highest prices there, that's £250, then maybe £50 for the MOT, that's £300. I have no idea if those prices are good or not tho cos I don't think I've ever taken my my car to a garage to have work done. lol

my cav is going to cost that to get an mot this time round but the way i look at it - it will be good for another year, I could buy a new car but, for that money it could cost me soon enough anyway.

Not true, if its a pierburg 2e3 theyre made by fisher price and fall apart at the drop of a hat, ive had a few of them and have had good and bad ones, when they work theyre mint when they dont the car doesnt run!

depends, if we did it at my work would proberly been more along the line of £500, at the end of the day decent oil would be £30+ the filter and thatsnot the service!

I've had about 4, and only had dodgy autochokes....where you stop at petrol stations and it won't start for about an hour afterwards

she has a 1.6 merit?:wtf:

I know of a few people who have had epic bother with 2e3's and if you ask about anyone will tell you theyre poo lol

Jon_nova1
19-09-09, 09:46 AM
just take note of the second point then of buying one of here lol

can only assume shes got an old school astra carbed engine in a 1.2 shell, or got a 1.2 and REALLY wants something faster lol

carrie_girl_wonder
19-09-09, 10:04 AM
lol I think it's a 1.6 cav engine from what the guy said years ago when i got it but thats debatable. It's stopped over running a bit now since the service but yeah auto chokes poo as well, the whole engine is poo, shouldn't have taken an ex boyfriend along that knows nothing about vauxhalls when i went to look at it,oh well all you can do is learn!:)

I might sell George for something faster but I love him so much I'd cry if I sold him to some gay boyracer, for him to undo all my hardwork of fixing all the bodge jobs from the last guy.

carrie_girl_wonder
19-09-09, 10:05 AM
oh yeah i know this is really dense, but are all carbortors the same or do i have to get a specific one ...

Jon_nova1
19-09-09, 10:11 AM
you want to sort out the bodges i keep finding on this car? i found a funny one the other day....forgot what it was...guess it wasn't that funny afterall:wtf:

a 1.6 old school vauxhall should work fine, an astra 1.6 carb should work fine, i had one bolted to my old 1.4 lol

specifics are what engines size its off and vauxhall, i'd assume they're bolted the same

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VAUXHALL-CAVALIER-1-6-GL-FOR-BREAKING-1600-CARB_W0QQitemZ290348364169QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Ca rsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item439a1c7189&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

at our garage the price would be

Full service 2 hours labour at £46.50 - £93
Parts for service £50? give or take includes flushes sundries etc etc
Flexi hose 30mins labour £23.25 plus part £10-£20?
CV Boot £10 + 1 hour labour £46.50
Mot Test £40
Rear cylinders 30mins a side £46.50 plus cylinders £10-£15 each
Tyre £30? depends on size?

£93.00
£50.00
£23.25
£20.00
£46.50
£10.00
£40.00
£46.50
£30.00
£30.00

£493.00 total + vat £70.35

£563.65 at my garage thats based on basic prices and were only a local independent so at a bigger garage i would expect more and i do the invoicing so i know that would be the price we might give or take here and there as its an old car and you love it etc etc and your a bird :D hehe but i would rest assured that you havent been ripped off. It easy for some people on here to say oh that too much but yeah it might be i could do that on a saturday morning for £100 plus parts but then you havent got any gurantee etc etc.
Hope that helps!

For me spending £400 to service a Nova is shocking but then not everyone has nouse with a spanner.

But you are part of a club, and in future ask for help first, there are plenty of people who would be happy to help without the alteria motive of wanting to be in the same pair of knickers as you lol

EDIT just re-read and realised Im getting uber naive in my old age lol

yeh the carb is probably specific, and there are different ones,

get up a pic of the engine and people will tell you what it is

the oil leaks are probably gaskets and are like 30 min jobs,

just start reading things on here and learn how to do it ya self :)

Mechanical ------> that way

£400 is not bad, they may have come across seized nuts/bolts and other problems which adds up in the labour charge, then you have parts which again all adds up.
