there is a kit on ebay where you blank the transfer box out. but a f28 is harder to fit than a f20 box

oh right thanks i was told that engine was better than the other 2 redtops so i thought when it gets nearer the time i would get that one

the genuine red top has some sort of mythological status, even though it goes porous....

what would you say is genuinly better the red top or the eco-tec

depends what you are after really...

the redtop was actually a homologation special head that was fitted to the 2.0 engine by cosworth so gm could use it in motorsport & made 150hp but has porosity problems

the ecotec will get you to the moon & back and give 140hp & is cheaper than chips....

your choice really

The C20XE (aka red top) came with 2 heads. Mainly the GM head which had 'porosity' problems (wrongly called a porus problem, its actually a cracking issue mainly due to vauxhall speccing the wrong torque settings for the head bolts originally)

The cosscast head, which you are looking at, was found normally on easrly pre cat 20xe's and some mid term dizzy c20xe's. It doesn't give any power gains whatsoever, regardless of what you have heard. The only difference is they dont go 'porus' under normal conditions. In fact, for tuning purposes, the GM head is mildly better for porting although the differences are slight.

The ecotec is the later engine which repaces the C20XE., and I would avoid for the simple reason that these engines, as well as the small block variants, are overloaded with sensors in order to get the emissions down and the economy up. They are down on power compared the the c20xe, but in a Nova, when you take into acount most C20xe's are old and tired and probably 15bhp down on power anyway, its not going to make much difference.

So to your original question, just rob the engine from the 4x4 and leave the gearbox behind, and fit an F16 or F20 found on all big block vauxhalls from the 90's early 2000's era :)
