Bout time i finally got my finger out and made a thread, been up to the unit to see my nova for the first time in six weeks today, and raped the poor thing lol

Got all the interior and dash stripped out, wiring loom pulled out and moved to the rear and removed the tacky cheap poo immobiliser too, heres some pics of the progress so far.......

Now thats how you remove the sound deadening, nice and easy in one lump, if only the other side were as easy

got all of the passenger side sound deadening chipped out aswell, who needs a heat gun, err me please for future reference lol

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/Nova%20Wip/DSC03691.jpg

Then packed up and put her away, only need the coolant dropping so can remove the heater matrix and drop the pedal box and column...

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/Nova%20Wip/DSC03693.jpg

Evantual plans for now, are tidy up all my shocking wiring and get a better condition GSi dash, GSi front seats and just a carpeted rear with a half cage, front coileys and some -90mm rear springs, respray in white and play with the 1400 engine thats currently in situ as its a good strong engine and fairly quick as it stands, then looking to XE next year after ive had the chance to save up lol

vaughanmc

How did you manage to get it off in one piece lol ?

That black dash would look good in my red Nova :thumb:

Good work fella!

Mike
13-09-09, 07:13 PM
LOL the drivers side in my white shell came out in one piece lol but the pass side was a proper mare lol lol

Spudly
13-09-09, 07:13 PM
Its cos the battery tray has been leaking and allowing water ingress so its parted the sticky crap and allowed it to just pull out in one lump lol

In all fairness dude the dash is skip fodder as one of the fixing bolts is missing, its warped out of shape and is in a tatty shape with lots of random hole cut into it:cry:

Mike snap, lol leaky battery trays FTW, rob suggested pouring some water in the passenger side and leaving it a week haha!

Water, its the way forward when it comes to stripping lol

Any suggestions on how to get shut of the sticky crap left where ive chipped off the passenger side floorpan, im guessing turpentine substitue or tar and glue may not be adequate to do it but not sure?

Im shocked as to how bad the battery tray/throttle pedal area are so im considering removing the firewall in the bay to gain better repair access to it!

its **** getting that sound deadening out is'nt it mate i did it in the sr and gte! it was all the way right up to the boot pannel in the gte but fotunately the sr was just thr front footwells lol i used t cut to get the black crap it left up mate well i did in the gte in the sr i used terps!

Ah nice to see you cracking on for once rather than playing Mr nazi !!! lol

Only joking pal, just a helping hand though.... A heatgun will make life uber easy if you plan on removing all sound deadening. Your plans do sound good. ;)

Nick.

13-09-09, 08:41 PM
Looks like you've got a fair bit of work there spud, what are the future plans?

Spudly
13-09-09, 08:52 PM
Errr, remove most of the crap that i dont particularly need, then tidy up my chassis leg on nearside and get the battery tray replaced (which is why the bulkhead is poorly where the throttle pedal is) i want a half rear cage and possibly carpet out the rear, cos im not a fan of bare metal fully stripped out, if i cant get it to work ill just bung all the back seats back in lol

Cheers for the vote of confidence nick, was scary though stripping the car im sposed to love:roll:

Wouldve used a heat gun but there kind of wasnt one to hand so big scrapy thing and hard work FTW:thumb:

Petrol or thinners is most effective. You'll be wanting thinners if you are going to do any prep work on the body.

Cool plans anyhow.

wait till we attack the cav with hammers and grinders :p lol

Hmmm, im not sure that will be happening tbh  lol

Cheers craig ill see if i can 'borrow' some thinners from work to get her cleaned up in the floorpan, i couldnt beleive how much the rubber sound deadening from behind the dash weighs, she gonna be faster just from weight loss lol

Yep i know the one you mean now, the new one, well find out how much he might want and whats with it as im not actually planning on XE'ing till next year tbh but it might be worth putting on the back burner for next year, nice slow rebuild and play with!

Sloth
13-09-09, 11:55 PM
indeed, build it slow, and get it looking spanky. then you can paint and polish the engine block.... still got a v6 here if you man up mind....

Spudly
14-09-09, 12:09 AM
There are two welders and about six weldee's in my lockup, i need to source some good metal and some decent primer/rust coating and see who is up for doing my battery tray for me, once thats done i can build up the interior again and sort the loom where the utter shoite immobiliser used to be, then its engine out and give it a gasket and clean up while i prep the chassis leg and get that welded then its build up time again and off to my mate for a new arch and a paintjob:thumb:

*Update time*

Day seven in the big brother chicken shed lol

Been up to get some more strippyness done today, moved her outside to drop the coolant and start pulling the heater box out.....

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/Nova%20Wip/DSC03818.jpg

This is how the battery tray hole started out....

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/Nova%20Wip/DSC03819.jpg

Chassis leg...

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/Nova%20Wip/DSC03820.jpg

And the state of the inside of the car...

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/Nova%20Wip/DSC03821.jpg

Back inside and got cracking on removing the engine bay wiring, all pulled through into the car now, and most of the coolant pipes off and the heater box out...

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/Nova%20Wip/DSC03822.jpg

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/Nova%20Wip/DSC03823.jpg

Chassis leg after a bit of bashing and scraping with a big ass screwdriver, is actually solid so i reckon a zippy wheel to take it all back and treat it with rust killer and possibly a bead of weld and it will be good as new...

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/Nova%20Wip/DSC03825.jpg

Battery tray now the holes have been widened....

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/Nova%20Wip/DSC03826.jpg

Torchlight from underneath to show the hole...

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/Nova%20Wip/DSC03829.jpg

And the scuttle now cleared of blower motor and the like, im in two minds on removing the firewall, im tempted to do it but unsure, opinions please....

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/Nova%20Wip/DSC03827.jpg

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/Nova%20Wip/DSC03828.jpg

Plan is next time im up there, is to get myself an engine stand and get the lump dropped out, split from the box and up on a stand so i can start to strip and degrease and clean up the block, my mates suggested removing the sound deadening from the bulkhead as its a fire risk whilst welding and plus i can check for rot along the bulkhead too!

AlexW
17-10-09, 08:51 PM
Not as rotten as some. Get some sort of wire wheel on the rust and bring it back to bear metal if you can, then krust or somthing.
You problery know anyway.

Dont fancy selling the blukhead sound deading do you? :p

Ps: removing the blukhead on a road car with the heater etc in place will cause a lot of nasty engine smells to come into the cabin, Its not nice smelling burning oil or anything lol

Cheers joff, i should be alright as its a simple chop the wires then the two halves run to the switch, its one of those old plug in 'the immobiliser' things, ive snipped it out just need to rejoin them and run a length into the car as im gonna mount an ignition kill switch, need to source an alarm too while im playing with wires:thumb:

Aye i know those deadings are a pain in the tit to remove but ive been lusting after one for years.

Oh just a point, with the wire wheel, i found a grinder attachment is much better than a drill one due to the speed. Been stripping it all off my shell and its so much easyer with the grinder lol

I have a couple of Meta immobilsers if you need one - excellent quailty (have them on all of the fleet) and I think they are CAT2 as well (all black wires)

I think I have a Meta M99 alarm as well but its used so can't comment on how the loom would mate up.

Small update for today, more little bits falling into place, i came across a blue antibes carpet the other week, looked like its had some oil spilled on it some pointand needed some tlc, asked my mate if i could use his steam cleaner (co-owns a second hand car spot) and he said no probs as long as i took him some sugar as he had none and needed a coffee lol

So for a bag of sugar i got the use of his diesel powered steam cleaner (heat needed to clean em properly) and the interior cleaner too, even got to give the cav a quick splash over too, cheers jon youre a star!

Anyways pics needed, heres the carpet a few weeks back when i got it from my mate (an no im not selling it) tis in good nick apart from its had bucket seats bolted directly through the floorpan previously (these holes are under the seat so wont be seen) and its had fixing points for harnesses bolted through the center tunnel on the sides behind the front seats, again niggly so i dont mind....

Dont know but im guessing yours sounds like the same squeak as mine, from the base when you hit a bump and its "eek, eek, eek"

Where the support springs in the base are connected to the metal frame of the base , the springs are wrapped in what looks like headlining material.

This material wears through over the years of use and then starts moving against the metal base - this is when you get the squeaks.

If you have your seats out have a look underneath and get an old pair of jeans or something, chop them up and replace the material at the ends of the support springs which should cure the problems.

Right update time, and ITS DEAD!!

Went out this morning after a steaming hot cup of enthusiasm and with the help of mr roth we pulled the front end off and ummm, well ill let the pictures do the talking...

Gave her some air in the back tyres as they had gone flat again..

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/My%20Nov/05092010172.jpg

Then after a rinse off, the last few pictures in one piece..

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/My%20Nov/05092010173.jpg

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/My%20Nov/05092010174.jpg

Been using her as a storage yard..

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/My%20Nov/05092010175.jpg

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/My%20Nov/05092010176.jpg

Got her eyes and and grille off, looking a bit holey and manky behind there...

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/My%20Nov/05092010177.jpg

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/My%20Nov/05092010178.jpg

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/My%20Nov/05092010179.jpg

Bumper off and didnt look too bad, till i started poking the crossmember with a pointy thing, there is something quite sickening about the mushy scratchy noice a screwdriver makes as it parts rotten metal isnt there..

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/My%20Nov/05092010180.jpg

Mullered wing there methinks..

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/My%20Nov/05092010181.jpg

Then the other side wing off and look at this massive hole, im fairly sure that should be attatched...

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/My%20Nov/05092010182.jpg

After a little more pokeyness on the crossmember...

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/My%20Nov/05092010183.jpg

Gone behind aswell..

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/My%20Nov/05092010184.jpg

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/My%20Nov/05092010185.jpg

More to show the inner arch, underside of the strut top is gone too..

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/My%20Nov/05092010189.jpg

Inner rear arch parting the seam sealer in the boot, so thats gone too then..

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/My%20Nov/05092010190.jpg

Boot floor to back panel...

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/My%20Nov/05092010191.jpg

This side doesnt look too bad but is going behind the previous repair...

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/My%20Nov/05092010192.jpg

More holes anyone...?

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/My%20Nov/05092010193.jpg

And in this pic look at the roof line and the scuttle panel line, they both look level, the slam panel however does not, that says to me that the nearside of the car is sagging down due to the rot yes?

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/My%20Nov/05092010194.jpg

Oh and my arch which has parted inside and gone through into the car too, big enough to get your hand into...

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/spudly01/My%20Nov/05092010196.jpg

In all fairness i expected this really as its been stood under a tree for about ten months or so without a cover, so its time for a reshell methinks, quite gutted but its too far gone i reckon, especially seen as i cant weld, nor have a welder lol

Just because its turreted doesn't mean you can't use dampers in it and set up for big block means it's strengthened and got a cut out, which is an issue because?

As said in text mate, get yaself an early mk1,as i said before i'll stitch and strengthen it for you.Tbh you could repair cya but after gas, wire, metal, panels, seam sealer and paint etc you would be better off putting to a new shell.Get it stripped, sell the mk2 horribleness and come over to the wonderful world of early mk1's

05-09-10, 07:03 PM
i agree spud.. there are a few people here offering to help you with welding it.. grinding off and replacing a mount is easy, so that shouldn't be an issue.

Spud, complete front panel is around £85, a few sheets of tin for plating ain't much and some "local" repairs to the rust,
but if the chassis legs look rough or have any hint of a hole then DEFO go for a reshell, if the legs are good on the front and the back I'd repair it with a new front panel too, just my opinion

a reshell is a quicker route usually tho.

Mike

Well, last ever update on this from me as it went to its new home today!

Went out and pumped up the tyres which had gone flat, and dragged it out from where it had been sat for about a year now:eek:

Thought id best give it a clean aswell due to it being a few inches thick in crap...

I thought that as i cleaned it, guess thats a testament to the £300+ price tag you get with Gard-X, as thats the only stuff i polish my cars with:thumb:

Im sooo hoping its not too far gone as id love to see it again back on the road and fulfilling Claire's plans, im properly gutted now its gone though, i want to start looking for another one, but ive had at least one nova for almost the last eight years, and ive wanted a cav turbo almost as long:eek:

looking forward to getting started on this =D

steves had a little looksy round it tonight and decided that some of the welding he is going to have to do as it'll be abit tricky, hes also thinking of cutting the inner arches off his 4x4 as they've got to come off anyway and donating them to CYA (btw, number plate is not going anywhere lol)

dont worry spud, it'll live =D

edit - its claire, not steve talking in 3rd person lol
