Im not sure there is a problem here but on other hand not convinced there isnt . .

A friend asked me to service his F plate 1.2 (ST engine) and the engine temp runs at half to just over half. This is signicantly higher than my Novas which all run at quarter and go upto half on gauge in heavy traffic then fan cuts in.

I think this is a bit high so checked the following;

1. Waterpump - new within last 6 months
2. Thermostat - replaced
3. Headgasket - No oil in water or vice versa/or smoke plus heater is hot

Can any 1.2 owners advise where their gauges read? Granted this needs a fan switch BUT this still runs a lot warmer than mine when driving normally.

It could be normal?

mine runs like that, goes just over half and then the fan kicks in. maybe a faulty radiator? blocked? mine has a few dents in but that shouldnt make a difference i dont think

Haven't you had it sitting idling for a while to see if guage keeps rising or if fan kicks in?

Yes had it idling for ages - fan switch is broken so fan does not kick in, but does not overheat after 30 mins just goes over halfway (new switch on order)

However, usually if I did this with one of mine the temp would then drop if I drove it up the road - this doesnt it stays at this level!

Blocked radiator was something I wondered - feels hot allover no cold spots but poss could be blocked?!

Mine runs approx 1/4 or maybe a tad over (espesh today) in normal ~30 mph conditions, then rises to halfway and fan cuts in in traffic.

I found that with the sporty Novas, the clocks barely register (temp, voltage) but on lesser models the dials show higher readings.

That sounds normal IMO. (1/2 way on temp) - but my GSi shows 1/4 when at norm temp.

it sounds absolutely normal to me

Cheers guys

Matt Vaughan - thats what all mine do which I consider normal

Ill tell him to run it (once fan switch comes) and see what happens. Strangely though if fan is on permenently it makes no difference!

It won't, like if you put a fan over a pan of water, it would still heat up, but will only get to a certain temperature before the fan and natural loss of heat stops it going further

all it'll do is make the engine warm up slower

mine sits just over the quarter mark when driving but when in traffic it goes up to half way then then the fan kicks in
