Yes. You need a valid tax disc in your window.

Use the search as this comes up regularly, yes you can get done for not displaying a valid disc!

youd be unlucky to get stopped because it would be all clear on ANPR

mine fell of the windscreen and i got a fine for not displaying it even though it had 8 months tax left and was parked down a narrow lane.

depends if the copper that pulls you is in a good mood or not! lol

but as soon as you pay for it, your covered but initially you shouldn't be on the road with out that expensive piece of paper, most bacon will let you off with a stern word and look, and a slap on the wrist, some how ever will have fun time with charges

You get done for failiure to display, not for having no tax. Difference is as above, police may use some discretion in the former instance where they would not in the latter.

There is actually some kind of grace period after it's been bought, can find the info on the net somewhere if you search hard enough.

That is true, its 5days after you bought the disc online, can be found on a reminder or is on the DVLA website.

You'll geta 14 day ticket to produce it. Blame the hot weather for making your disc fall off the screen when (if) you have to produce.
Should be OK. As stated, it's illegal though. Outdated IMO!

you are breaking the law if your not displaying, its upto the officer if they do anything, i remember my tax disc holder kept falling of the screen so i threw it in the glove compartment, when i got pulled and they asked, i just told them and they were ok

Thread of fail lol

If you application for VED renewal has been received by the Secretary of State (online applications are considered instant delivery) then you're Ok. As soon as you have the tax disc however, you are required to display it. Thats where the few days grace spans from, as it won't/shouldn't take more than a couple days for the new disc to arrive.
