how to ge the right effect

right i know this might be stupid and i dont no why but it baffles the sh*t out of me. How do you get a chequerd effect when masking. Without getting the masking gap between the squares
Someone please help

tape squares inside the grids as he's doing in the fist pic, then remove the original grid pattern

i knew it would be simple but bafffled the Sh*out of me for some reason

right i have been out to the van and had a ponder i am going to spray all the squares matt black and leave the masking lines to brake it up hopefully will have pics later for you all to have a look at
