cheap tools are like chocolate

halfords professional are good and snap are great but not cheap

my mate who recently has been updating my project thread (CGCR) has a very large snap on collection and i think the tool box cost him a couple of G 2nd hand

teng???

09-09-09, 03:59 PM
Has to be snap on all the way, not enough mac tools dealers on the go and you can't beat the aftersales from snap on, no hassle when changing the lifetime guarentee stuff.

halfords - socket set Ive got has outlasted anything else!

I'd agree with Ade - got a 1/4 and 3/8 set from Halfords about 12 years ago and its still going strong - just added to the set with extra bits over the years.

Got a mixture of Snap On, Teng, Halfords, Britool etc. They all do there job and i have done many a job with them!

L14MNP
09-09-09, 04:20 PM
Aye. Mixture for me too. Mostly Halfords Pro these days though. They're decent enough. Nothing is unbreakable. The important bit is getting them replaced FOC.

Too many 12 siders in the 150 pc socket set for my liking TBH but it's a steal at £99.99. All my tools get a good work out and very rarely let me down. My low entry 2 ton Arcan jack is showing it's age now though :( Good job Cosco has them for £80 :)

snap-on,i know a guy who believes snap-on are the best tools to have and that any others aren't worth while

L14MNP
09-09-09, 04:50 PM
^ Does he work for them perchance? If not he's been brainwashed. They're good, maybe they are the very best but as for nothing else being worthwhile he can GTF.

Stuart
09-09-09, 09:19 PM

Stuart
09-09-09, 09:41 PM

If you walk into a garage and the mechanic - sorry "Tech" FFS - has Snap On EVERYTHING, walk straight back out.

I've got a mixture of all the big names but the best buy of all is 2 names not mentioned yet: Bergen and US Pro Tools.

Unfortunately it's not possible to stick to one make and be certain what you buy will be up to the job, you need to learn to judge for yourself what's good and what isn't. Yes some of the bergen/us pro stuff is ****e, but the same can be said of any brand.

That said, if you really aren't sure, just buy Blue Point stuff on eBay.

And like Stu said, Teng aren't worth bothering with.

Blue point used to be a pretty well kept secret lol

Their cordless LED inspection lamps FTW, I knocked a full size c02 pub bottle onto mine and bar a few scratches it's fine!

are they the smaller ones about six or seven inches in height, if so yeah i have one aswell, its the only light that i bought that has lasted more than 6 months,

L14MNP
11-09-09, 12:13 PM
Yeah 7/8 inches mate. Awesome light spread/battery life. Had nearly a year from mine so far. Know what you mean about others not being up to it.

I have halfords cheap stuff, but it has lasted me 4 years still going strong as ever. other than the box they come in which has been dicapitated

Right i voted "cheap sh!t"
the reason being is that i came across a set of alloys in a scrap yard which had locking wheels nuts on, but no bit to get them off,i asked the guy in the scrap yard if he had a socket to take them off,he say's yeah ive a SNAP-ON impact socket, that should free them up just knock it on with a heavy hammer and use a long arm to sprise them off i tried got the socket on, then when i leavered it,it split the impact socket(so much for snap-on tools!)even he was amazedlol
any way a goes to a local just the job and bought a "CHEAP"set of socket which freed all four locking nuts.

paddy138
11-09-09, 07:41 PM
so how does that say there ****, so you basically hammered on probaly a well used socket and it stretched the walls and then it broke, thats not what its for, where as a new unworn socket took it off,
most snapon stuff me, my dad or anyone i work with only breaks when its not used properly

If you're after spanners I've just seen these (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270454690352) on ebay. I have a set and they are invaluable. I think I paid around £70 for mine too. (and no, it's not my auction!)
