hi
i have finally bought myself a new nova or atleast a project one after selling my much loved nova nearly 2 years ago
i went and picked up a white k reg nova today that a friend of mine has had sat at his house for about a year
has been sat on bricks due to having no running gear front or rear and no interior
is basically a bare shell with windows, doors, bonnet and and tailgate
tailgate and bonnet are mint but doors are beyond repair so need to source myself some good doors if anyone has any localish to me give us a shout :thumb:
i spent most of my first day of having the shell stripping what parts were still in the engine bay and stripping down where has had some welding done and the both inner wings were covered in underseal then painted over and all the paint has cracked
so stripping as much of the engine bay back to bare metal and sorting out some bad bits of welding on one of chassis leg tops
here are a few picture of the car nothing in real detail will post some up when i get stuck in a bit more

as you can see from photos is covered in green horrible stuff which comes off trees and plants etc
all that cleaned straight off just so could i could get it back white even though will be re painted at some point
all comments welcome will be updating this project most weekends as is a lot of work to do so will grab photos as and when i can
thanks for looking cheers alan :thumb:
good base to start with, bit TLC you'll end up with mint shell. where are you in north east i might have few bits if your interested. what engine you droppin in?
sweet, be nice to see another nova in the north east. and what he said^^^ what engine? I also have a few parts laid about so drop me a pm if you need anything (no doors though)

im not 100% sure of what im going to do engine wise yet will see what becomes available whilst sorting the shell out
sorting the shell out is my main priority at the moment
im based in brotton which is about 20mins south of middlesbrough
what parts have you both got lying about will mostly be looking for running gear so once shell is sorted can get it all rolling again
progress today i mostly spent the couple of hours i was working on the car today stripping more paint of the engine bay all around lights and inner wings stripped to bare metal and i also removed the small bulkhead / firewall that ususlly hides battery etc
will post some pictures up tommorrow night

looking forward to get window surrounds
shell has a few bits of rot but nothing major all engine bay is good apart from a small patch of weld and a poor attempt at stich welding bay by one of previous owners
de locked doors aint a problem saves me a job anychance of photos of doors and what sort of price we talking
cheers alan
Looks a good base mate. Im breaking a GSi atm and have all the running gear on it

spent some more time on the nova over the weekend only just got chance to update tonight
been mostly stripping the paint off the engine bay and treating the the small patches of rust i have come across
i cut out the small tab that was left from removing firewall at back of engine bay also removed battery clamp and washer bottle mount
also started removing the front skin from my front panel but ran out of time so first job next week is to drill out the spot welds along the bottom of front panel
ill let the pictures do most of the talking

i didnt want to say that, your so suttle lol
I'd rather say it now than let him spray his engine bay to find out the hard way. Been there before myself :(

the cut out on the drivers chassis leg aint my doing and will be getting cut out and done properly
was already done to the shell when i got it
i was sure it was in the wrong place but was not sure by how much as i have not done the chassis leg mod before as i mounted alternator on front of engine on my old valver nova
anyone got exact measure ments as to where the cut out for alternator should be ?
cheers alan:thumb:

is this more the sort of area the alternator cut out should be as im planing to correct it at the weekend

been doing some more on my nova this weekend still sorting the engine bay but been welding up holes i dont need like old brake servo hole etc
also cut out the appaling job that had been done when it was put in by previous owner, was also in the wrong place
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/31.jpg
cut out original plate and cut out some more so cut out was far enough back
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/32.jpg
welded in a new plate
is larger than usual cut outs due to previous owner putting in in wrong place so cut it back enough and just fill full hole rater than trying to replicate shape of chassis leg
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0230.jpg
all holes in bulk head fill in except one for steering rack, clutch cable holder and accelerator cable holes
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0231.jpg
decided to strip all undersides of my arches to get rid of underseal etc on it found a small bits of rust but mowt a plate and a welder wont sort out
will be more updates through the week

been working on the nova quite a lot this week as i have been at home working so have had time most nights to spend on my nova
i have mostly been cleaning under front arches and stich welding the engine bay even though i have not finished all the welding as i am waiting for my chassis strengthening kit to arrive then i can get on with finishing off the welding on the front end
i have also spot welded my new front panel outer skin on , did this by bolting on both of my new wings then bolting the new front panel cover inbetween them all lined up perfectly
also modified my chassis leg further as i altered the bodge that the previous owner had done but i didnt quite take enough out of where i should of done but is all sorted now
here are some pictures of where i am at with the car at the moment
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0234.jpg
chassis leg finally sorted and cut out enough
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0235.jpg
the engine bay as it stands at the moment just need to weld plate over the heater blower hole
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0233.jpg
new front panel fitted in place
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0232.jpg

this aint my first big block nova but is the first time i have cut the chassis leg as i mounted my alternator on the front of the motor last time but didnt want to do that this time as im hoping to go with a c20let this time but will just have to see how it goes but the shell is my main priority at the moment
and thought i would post this pic up just to see what response it gets as is something totally different on a 2 door hatch that i aint ever seen before ( but im sure it more than likely has been just i aint seen it )

oh i wondered why you bought that wing of me lol hmmm interesting
Ive always wanted to do that mate, i personally think it would look ace.
Yep will look awesome, seen a few photoshops and I think a pic of it done. Very mk1-Astra-y
Just needs to be nice and low to pull it off!
Got to be very low with saloon/more door arches just for it to even look low.
will need some total slammage,
IMO i prefer the 3 dr arches
nuds sr
04-10-09, 12:25 AM
car is definatly going to be low i already have the rear coilovers for the car which im going to turret the to accept them and im on the look out for some front coilovers but there is a lot of work to be put into the car but will look awsome when done or thats what my images of the final product in my head look great

bit of an update
when i got the shell the car had had the spare wheel well cut out of the back but had had 4mm thick piece of sheet steel very badly welded into the back was so badly welded that a couple of smacks with the hammer actually popped the welds off allowing the plate to be removed
so i them tidyed any rough edges up, then set about removing the spare wheel well from a nova i am breaking for spares, i drilled out as many spot welds as i could find along the chassis legs and then cut as much metal out as i could
once removed and trimed a bit i put the wheel well in place by roughly lining up the row of spot welds on each side then marked on the undersideand then added 10mm so i could set an edge on the wheel well
i then set the edge and jacked the wheel well into place on the jack and spot welded it into place
this is how it now looks:
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0249.jpg
i have also started to stich weld my interior have only got the drivers side done so far but will be doing the passenger side tonight hopefully
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0247.jpg
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0246.jpg
thats all for now will updated again soon cheers alan
I love that you've put the well back in, i keep thinking of doing that to mine.
nuds sr
09-10-09, 02:43 PM
looks a lot better than the flat floor that was in it was just a total mess with poor welding and silicon sealent shot everywhere around it
it just depends on how good of a job you do with a flat boot to how well it actually looks
think mine looks a lot better now with the well back in
Some good work going on there, I'm interested to see how the arches turn out.

will keep posted on the progress of this build
starting to turret the rear to accept the rear coilovers only way will get the car low enough to look great on round arches

bit of an update as i aint had a lot of time on the car due to working away so not getting time on a night to spend on it
managed to get some time over the weekend to spend on the car and managed to finally get it on the roll over jig so i could clean off all the horrible underseal that it is covered in didnt find any suprises most of the rust i found was around the round holes that are punched into the chassis legs etc
i treated all the little bits of rust also striped all the underseal off from in the passenger rear arch
hoping to get the chassis rails stitch welded one night this week aswell as any other welding i need to do such as the chassis strengthening kit
here is some phots of the work ive done

how it looked after a lot of scraping off underseal and muck was not quite finished at this point but finished it yesterday but didnt get a photo of it just need to wipe it all over with some thinners to remove any daftlittle bits

has been a while since i updated my build
been mostly working on the underside of the car scraping off underseal and cleaning up rust and fitting chassis strengthening kits so just thought i would post up some pics of how the car is looking at the moment after a few saturdays working on the underside

next plan of attack are to build up some metal on the rear sill corners of the arch before replacing the sills then can get on with finishing off the rear arch conversion
cheers alan:d
Im well jealous of the arch conversion, me and my mates have spoke about it but they all talked me out of it! Looking good mate look forward to the progress.

been busy doing a bit of work on the nova today
decided to smooth my tailgate to fit with the smooth euro look that i am hoping to achive
i started out cutting out the whole middle of my tailgate so i could put a full flat steel panel across the boot too minimise the amount of filler i would have to use on the bootlid
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0303.jpg
the bit i cut out
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0304.jpg
then i decided to cut up the boot lid off the the 5 door saloon i broke lately for parts for my project
i used the boot lid because it had a slight curve to the bootlid both ways like you need to get the right shape to a smooth tailgate
the boot lid
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0306.jpg
what i was left with after cutting up the boot lid
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0307.jpg
i then removed the paint from the areas of my tailgate i would be welding too
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0311.jpg
after cutting the sheet for the boot lid down to size i set about tacking the sheet of steel to my tailgate
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0312.jpg
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0313.jpg
i then ran a flap disc over the welds for were flat and then coated all the bear metal with some primer
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0315.jpg
i know some people will say that smooth tailgates are so out of date but im doing this car the way that i want it and is different for a reason
as i want smooth, low and different
all comments welcome about my build
cheers alan

been doing some more bit on my project over the last few days
i started by making up and welding in some rear turrets for my rear coilovers
they took a long while to cut out all the parts and cut out the back of the car where the turrets are to be fitted
here is some photos of them in place
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0318.jpg
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0319.jpg
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0321.jpg
i also welded in some rear seat mounts as when i got the shell they had all been cut out of the rear of the car but not very well so i could see where they needed welding back in all apart from the centre one which i could tell from the metal that was attached to the seat mount from the car they were cut out of
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0320.jpg
i also started putting the round arch on the passenger side
started this by cutting out most of the standard arch
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0325.jpg
i also cut off the sill that had gone rotten around the drain holes so i could replace it
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0326.jpg
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0327.jpg
once all the rotten metal was cut out from the sill and arch corner
i started to rebuild all inner sill
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0328.jpg
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0330.jpg
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0331.jpg
i then rebuilt a small portion of the inner arch before the new outer arch is to be fitted
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0333.jpg
i also took delivery of this little beauty today that i bought from a local breakers yard
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0322.jpg
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0323.jpg
was bought mainly for some parts that im missing such as a full set of glass including top tint screen as all mine in my shell as grinding spark damage to every single piece of glass and both doors are rust free (passenger is mint but drivers has some dents but nothing that wont knock out they are also delocked
has a few other good parts aswell
car will be getting broken soon for parts (shell also for sale but has some damage to rain gutters from being moved in breakers yard but could easily be hammered out ) if interested in anything please pm me

finally ahd time to do some work and take some photos of my progress been mostly concentrating on getting the underside of the car all sorted and ready to be stone chipped
first plan was to get plenty of red oxide primer painted onto all the underside of the car
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0381.jpg
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0382.jpg
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0383.jpg
i also got myself a new bonnet from tom beverley a png member as mine looked as if someone had taken the bonnet off with a crow bar
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0384.jpg
i also finished inside the car around the front floor pan area
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0387.jpg
finished welding in the new rear arch and stich welding the arches
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0388.jpg
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0390.jpg
once all the red oxide had had a few days to dry i managed to get a coating of stone chip on the bottom of the car
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0392.jpg
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0393.jpg

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0397.jpg
did some of the passenger front arch to finash off the tub of stone chip
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0394.jpg
will all this done and the stonechip dry i made a frame with wheels on it so i could can wheel the car about without the running gear on it
is now sat on this frame and is ready for me to set on with the body
this is how i left the car tonight

spend some more time on the nova today
decided now that i have the car on the frame i would bolt on the new wings, grill and bumper to the car to check all lines up fine such as bumper lines and where the grill clips in etc
also started to mount my engine (bare block and f28 box) on my uprated engine mounts to find the mounts pull engine out of line as back mount was not sat off bottom of the car as much as standard one so had to space that off this all sorted it out and lined up fine

have been busy on the car over the last few weeks doing what i can and then have had a few days off over the last week
so decided to get the engine mounts sorted and get the bare engine and gearbox in so could finish off the engine bay
decided to take a similar route to mounting the f28 6speed box as austin did with his saloon but i made the box mount up from scratch
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0410.jpg
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0414.jpg
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0411.jpg
once this was on this left my engine looking like this once mounted
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0412.jpg
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0413.jpg
then decided that i was going to lead fill the seams where i have let in the saloon rear arches and in fill panels and the saloon rear panel
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0417.jpg
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0416.jpg
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0415.jpg
then once the rear quater and rear panel had had the rough bits ground off with a flap wheel gave the quater a skim of filler to fill over the lead
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Photo0424.jpg
and a photo i took just as i was locking up today of how the car will be sat till next weekend when im home and hopefully get to do some more on the car

I know what your saying fella, Im sure it'll turn a fair few heads with those rear arches! Do you have a colour in mind? I always said if I ever manage to build one ground up Id go white as I feel its hard to beat when done well plus its cheap and easy in comparison with the majority of colours too.

Re this one page back, it was the shape you had cut the arch, but course it was the shape of the hatch arch that had to be cut out. Before the saloon arch welded in.

and yeah you are right about the cut out on the quater is where i had to cut out the original arches so that the quater is flat apart from the saloon arches

hopefully it will turn heads when done as is so different to standard 3door hatch arches
i have thought about white and i love the look of novas in white but im fancying something that is near to white but aint quite white
i bought half a litre of a colour that seat arosa's come in, it is a very pale green that is verging on white and looks very similar to the green filler primer you can buy but this will be a flat pastley colour with the shine of the laquer and to contrast this will have early small saloon front and rear bumpers, early saloon grill, window surrounds, door handles and cavalier expression bbs alloys all done in satin black
that is more or less the plan for the car i think at the moment just hope the idea that is in my head will come to as i hope it will :)
cheers again alan
it will look cool when it's done. there is/was a dutch nova with saloon arches.

bit of an update from what i got up to on my project at the weekend
had my EDS enlarged top hat delivered from regal was suprising the size difference to this from the standard item
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Nova86.jpg
spent some more time preping the rear quater the back half of the quater is nearly there just a bit more to do on the front of the quater
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Nova89.jpg
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Nova88.jpg
also finished off the line along the quater that the bumper runs along but aint got any pictures of this
also spent some time on the rear panel where i have put saloon bottom half rear panel in to sit below my saloon rear bumper
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Nova87.jpg
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u318/nuds_photos/Nova90.jpg
will hopefully get some more work done on the car at the weekend and hopefully get the quater finished off and a good coat of high build primer on then will be time to move onto the passenger side

Great build, loving it. I have thought of round arched 3doors before, even started a thread or 2.
My only gripe is the flushed gate, it'll detract a little from the arches imo. But thats just my opinion, no need to justify it mate.
I look forward to much more progress.
You smoothing the rear panel to fit a skinny bumper? Looking good, the arches will defo be a unique touch :)

the rear panel is from a more door saloon that i broke before christmas for every last nut and bolt and mint dash etc as car only had 45k on it but was well rotten
i have welded in the rounded part that you see below the small bumper on early saloons so that i can run an early saloon bumper cut down to the hatch the full back end will be different
cheers for other comments glad people are liking my project

my project may of come to a unexpected halt today as i share a unit with 2 mates and got a phone call off one of them today saying that the other lad has set his car on fire in the unit and full unit was on fire
so headed down there to find the full unit gutted and the fire brigade damping down
once we were allowed back into the unit to see if there was anything worth salvaging to find to be truthfull not a lot of my nova parts saveable parts i did manage to save were rear beam and front arms etc that the rubber bushes had started to melt on but they looks rebuildable
my car has had most if the paint damaged all filler had seam sealer has burnt and crumbled along with my skimmed rear arches and back panel none of the panels have buckeled but roof has bonnet are dented from where the concrete panel roof cracked and crumbled and fell in but im hopeing that the rest of the shell will be salvageable but just not 100% sure of what to do as im just gutted that all my hard work has been ruined by a mate not been careful and not taking precautions when grinding
will be having a few weeks to think what im gonna do with the shell but will either start this one again or start another nova shell just not sure yet
but in the mean time will be looking for these parts to replace what i have lost:
early saloon front and rear bumpers
early saloon with squares on it
plastic trims that go along bottom of front panel
little plastic trims in an L shape that fit behind early bumpers
mk1 bonnet
early mk1 boot with just lock
rain gutter trims
all door rubbers and window runnerrubbers and metal holders out of doors
all link rods for handles in door
interior handles from roof
mounts for sunvisorsany one who can help please pm me about any parts cheers alan

cheers burgo im hoping that shell is salvagable and can start again easily most of panels still have pain on them just highly scorched but all panels such as doors and wings are straight and usable
is now been stored at a friends who work abroad 6weeks on 2 weeks off so might be a while till i can start but need parts first so fingers crossed this project will be back on track sooner rather than later

he owes my mate a lot more than he owes me
my mate lost a his rwd escort cosworth track car that should of been dropped off for mapping the day before but was not finished in time he has managed to salvage the high bhp c20let that was in it rear wheel drive but was no sign of all the carbon kevlar panels that were on it
to say the least he is devestated
i got off lightly compared to him
cheers for them comments everyone cheers alan

my worst fear was confirmed today the shell has twisted somewhere and is shafted can get my finger in the door gaps to rear quater and rest are more or less ok so gonna sell what i can parts that are left and then decide what to do from there but this car will be off to be scrapped at some point in the near future and dont know if i will do another one yet just wanna enjoy my summer now and get to some shows
cheers alan :(
