View Full Version : Budget 1400 Turbo Build!
Me and my mate decided since he has an empty garage we need to make use of it. Decided we want to build a do it yourself turbo conversion. The following day we had a 1400 mk3 astra traded in which was going for scrap. So £20 later we have our donar engine and pump :) Only on 79k, good runner and service history as well. Recent belt/waterpump
No pics of the astra or taking the engine out. Got a bit messy took it out the top with no crane so didnt want to get my phone covered in oil, just imagine a rusty old boat lol
So first up, engine on the stand and stripped down to the block.

Then start cleaning up some engine parts, want it to look pretty even if it doesnt work.

Gave everything a bit of a clean with degreaser and got some paint on.

We broke the cambelt cover getting the engine out (well i did) so we wont be running with one. So gave the pully a lick of silver as it will be on show

Whilst at my mates picking up my engine stand i tripped over this,
http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p24/novarich/1400%20Turbo%20project/DSC00046.jpg
Came off an rs turbo, has downpipe with so thought ideal! Thought they were t2, but this looks a bit big?

At the moment waiting on a 1600 cylinder head from dirtydog on here to save running a spacer plate as it will lower the compression. Need to source a broken 4 branch to cut up to make a manifold. Won an intercooler off ebay from an r5 turbo so should be ideal for what we need.
Will update as we go, comments/ideas welcome. Especially if you have done this sort of thing before
Good ideas there,
what are you going to do regarding the fueling?
is the engine a c14se ?

Escort RS Turbos were equipped with T3s
Good ideas there,

Yeh engines a c14se, and just put a rising rate regulator on it, should be ok.
Yep standard ecu, can get a new rising rate regulator with guage off ebay for under 30quid so should see the fuelling sorted. Probably use cream 20xe injectors as ive got them laying around. Only problem at the moment is the exhaust manifold, need to try making one with my crap welder (and welding lol)
Didnt realise the rs turbos were t3 when i got the turbo, thought they would have been smaller. Turbo lag anyone ?
no the turbo will be fine...

head is all wrapped up ready to go! ;) didnt realise it was to be used for such a good purpose! lol, i love this sort of stuff, did you see my 16 8v turbo corsa i built about 6 months ago?
are you going to do the turbo manifold upside down? (if you have seen mine, you will know what i mean) it gives a better oil return as theres not a great deal of space!

fiesta's were a t2 but the escort used a t3 with the sfi instead of efi :tard: :wtf:
just got my mates rst fiesta going nice 2.0 zvh engine in it :)
I have looked but none of the pics are working :(
The rs turbo manifold faces away from the front of the block. (the turbo flange is sideways if that makes sense?)
We are going to try that unless you can swivel the inlet side around. The exhaust is on the drivers side in the escort too.
We were looking at turning it upside down and swap the feed/returns over as it looks like it mounts the same way. This would put the exhaust on the gearbox side giving us more room for hosing. Do you know if this would be ok?

think you can acutally not to sure tho as the t2 is on the other way round on the fiesta
only way to find out is try it or wait till some one says yes or no :thumb:
know its not a very big pic, but shows the direction the flange faces

you can twiddle the inlet and exhaust housings around to your hearts content, as long as the return end faces down! you can always tap new thread for the actuator on the inlet side if you need to. i used a t25 from a nissan 200sx, took loads of fannying around to get it right, but it works perfect and looks mental!
il see if i can get a pic up of mine!

You got a pic of your finished manifold?
Another update for yesterdays going ons, currently waiting on some bits ive ordered, exhaust manifold flange, t3 flange and 1600 head.
Once the head comes we can get the engine built up properly instead of cleaning, then can start making the exhaust manifold up!
So start cleaning and masking up,

or8, just wondered how your going to do the oil feed and return on this, just wondered is all
Will update with pics once i get around to it, but pretty much will consist of an rs turbo feed pipe with an oil pressure guage adapter to work like a t-peice on the pressure sensor.
Return im going to weld a bit of pipe into the top of the sump, cant do this until i know where the turbo will be sitting exactly.

Mint build :)
How did you get the block so clean before you painted it?
Did you say that using the 1.6 head raises the CR ya?
Ive had this idea in my head but haven't got round to doing it yet!

Looks rather interesting, any idea what you're gonna do with the manifold yet? :)

um interesting build any updates at all? love the idea of a budget home brew turbo engine.
my mate i was building it with has dissapeard of the planet so its not going to happen, shame but ive got other things taking up my time now. my c20let build being one of them..
Im collecting the engine over the weekend as i need my engine stand back, may update in the future if i carry on with it myself
^to the question above, the 1600 head lowers the compression so i can run boost safely

Oh right,i thought you said it raised it lol
Im just trying to find out what stuff i should start collecting for when i do start a conversion and build :)
keep it and build it and sell it!..i might buy it depending on price!hmmm...
What kind of ecu you using?
PM me if you like
Cheers

Shame this isn't going ahead it looked like it would be a good build.
Was going to use a standard ecu, with adjustable fuel reg which raises the pressure with the boost.
Its kinda annoying its not been built, had a nova ready to buy and everything, only things to buy are car, headset/bolts, fuel reg, oil feed. May keep it to one side for the future will update the thread if i do carry on

Did you do any calculations on the fuel requirements for the engine on boost to find out what ratio of rising rate regulator you needed? Would be interested to see them as I can't find any info on it atm!
No was just going to buy one, set the boost at about 12psi and see what happened lol

was hoping for about 120, more interested in it actually working and running right really

12 psi should yield far more than 120 tbh, though I doubt the fuelling or intercooling would be upto that tbh. Looked a viable project however. 7 or 8 psi would see beyond 120 without creating too much heat/stress.
I would keep at it on the stand, in the shed. Sod putting into a car! lol
Started off a tad pikey with a rattle can rebuild though... :d
shame about the build, how much has it cost so far to get it to this point? would have loved to see this working as it doesnt look too complicated.
old vauxhall small block turbo vs volkswagen tsi??? lol.
Cost so far was about 120quid, that was a donar car for engine/box etc, r5gtt intercooler, turbo, 1600 head and the pikey rattlecans lol
Power figures sound quite interesting craig, makes me want to get it working now!
