View Full Version : Amp advice required.
I'm thinking of a bit of simple ice. I'm gonna upgrade my factory mk1 dash speakers, to some kenwoods i've aquired, and run them off my head unit.
Now i'm looking for some 6x9's, (not bought yet) will prob get some decent second hand ones off the bay. (seen some infinitys locally) I also have an old school 10" earthquake sub in a bandpass box.
I'm looking for a decent, branded amp to run both the 6x9's and the sub. (low pass filter required)
I've not been into my ice since i was in my teens and have completely lost touch with the ice stuff, so what can someone recommend me, and how much will i be looking to pay?

What power headunit are you running? im putting a small install in mine, but don't see a need to run 6x9's of an amp as they tend to have a low rms anyway and just using the amp to power the sub (200w headunit and 600w amp bridged)
i hope your speakers are a near enough fit for the dash lol
The head unit is only a budget panasonic, 4x40 iirc. So enough to run some 5" two way kenwoods in the oe place, but not the 6x9's imo.
was thinking of these 6x9's.

Not sure what the speakers are like, but infinity usually put out good stuff, although they do look quite budget
When i used to run 200W speakers through 54w it used to distort at about 2/3rds volume (kenwooods) but guess it depends on what works for you
5" won't fit the oe location without modification, this was my intention, but the oe speakers are only around 3"
you would get away with a 600W amp if you use the headunit amp and around 800 if your running 6x9's of the amp, thats if your only going for a simple setup anyway
So what sort of amp in particular would do the job? Any links?

I used to have(Still have it somewhere) a Rockford Fosgate Punch 4x50w RMS amp running a set of front components and a JL audio 10" sub and it was perfect.

well theres a couple of vibe black boxes on the bay (600w) which went for an extortionate amount of money a few years ago
or maybe try sony/legacy?
in all honesty unless your going to use graphics equalizers, top quality speakers etc, any amp would be sufficent, it would be the speakers that would show signs of abuse first
If your going to just run a sub you will preferably want a single channel or two channel and bridge them, or if your going to run 6x9's of the amp too, you'll need a 4 channel use two channels for the 6x9's and bridge the other two channels for the sub
Infinity are good, I'd happliy spend my money on them.
Need to know details (RMS + resistance) of the speakers and sub before you chose an amp though.
IMO you won't need an amp for the speakers, unless you wanna go crazy, my old setup was kenwood cd player (4x50w) that used to run to jbl front speakers and two jbl 6x9s (300watt) perfectly. I only used an amp for my sub, jbl 12" and that was powered by a budget two channel splx amp (bridged) I wasnt massively into my ice at the time but I used to crank it up and never had any issues with distortion, although I had the balance setup 60/40 for rear/front speakers. :thumb:

as some of the above comment you shouldnt really need to amp up the 6x9s unless you want to go all the way and have it loud! i currently have a good loud set up in my megane saloon(family reasons ha ha wish i didnt just spent near £500 on the abs system but anyway) ive got a ripspeed dv720 headunit 4x60watt running my 150watt door comps and dash tweeters then ive built a set of 6x9s in my rear door cards they are 350watt 6x9s running off a 500watt amp and the a 12inch 1000watt jbl sub in the boot running off a 1400watt amp. i have this all on a flick switch so i can turn all amps off when baby in the car but when its on its very very loud. unless you want it very loud i would just run the comps and 6x9s off the headunit and adjust the bass and treble to how you want it. then run your sub off the amp and make it bridged to get the full potential of the amp. Good luck....
